I have a cold and a bitter taste in my mouth?!

Question: I have a cold, and ever since I came down with it, I've had this really bitter taste in my mouth that I can't seem to get rid of. I've tried brushing my teeth, drinking fluids, even chewing gum. My mouth is also very dry. Any idea what this could be, and how to fix it?

It's pretty normal to have taste changes when you have a cold. Most of what we percieve as taste is actually smell, and when the nose is stuffy, things taste funny. Just about any strongly flavored food or drink will help, but unfortunately nothing will cure it. It will go away when the cold does. If you have been taking over the counter medicines to treat your cold, those do leave you with a dry mouth. There's really nothing to do for that except obey the need and drink, lots and lots of fluid. You are okay, really. Just drink and rest. The taste will go when the cold does.

a toothbrush and paste should do the trick.

It could be the cold medication that you are taking, if you are taking any. Also, a cold causes your nose to plug up which affects your sense of smell, which affects your taste. Have you tried brushing your tongue, especially as far back as you can without gagging? There is also a mouthwash out now called Oasis that helps with dry mouth.

Obviously, with a cold your Sinus' are effected...it could be your Sinus' dripping onto the Back of your throat/tongue causing the 'bitter' taste.
