The big problem with most antihistamines is that we build up a resistance to them thus we have to keep taking large doses in order to get the same results. The larger doses do have potential problems when one starts getting close to over dose levels for extended periods of time. While very rare one of the more serious with taking extended long term heavy doses is the potential to cause or greatly increase the risk of having a Transient Ischemic Attack (a small stroke).

As for normal side effects most any antihistamine has the potential of making a person drowsy or sluggish and can have reactions to other drugs or medications one might be taking.

Though several are used for calming nerves due to their sedative effects. Since you are talking about taking something for nerves I would suggest avoiding the antihistamines and try the herbal supplement Saint John's Wart. You can find it in most Wal-Mart or K-mart stores. It helps take that "sharp edges" off the anxiety so one can better deal with stress and the issues. Plus it has fewer side effects than Benedryl or most drugs and very few chemical interaction issues. However as with anything it works better for some people than others.

With trying to keep nerves under control, I would also suggest avoiding things like caffeine, chocolates, heavy sugars, etc. It sometimes makes a world of difference when we change/remove something from our diet that we would have never thought would effect us so much even when only consuming very small amounts.

Of course none of that will make the problem causing the anxiety go away, nor will any drug or diet. It just helps us to be a little more calm so we can deal with life and the issues better.

Since we are talking about medical issues I should probably make a bit of a disclaimer to anyone that reads this. I am not a medical professional. The statements above are strictly my opinion based on life experience and information available to me. They should not be considered medical advice. Any choices you make based on this information are at your own risk and your own responsibility.

Eventually, it will not help, your body will be come accustomed to it. That is the only affect i can think of.

It could eventually cause problems with your blood pressure being low. I take it everyday myself and the doc said just monitor your blood pressure.

The liver. Your more likely to be more depressed. I will never stop praying for you and your family.

Benadryl is the trademarked name for Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride. The main use for this drug is allergies, but it has some other uses as well. The main side reaction of this drug is drowsiness and it is the essential main ingredient in Sominex, an over-the-counter sleep aid. It is also sometimes used in the common cold, although that is probably overkill.

I have never heard of it being used as an anti-anxiety drug, but anything is possible. The main problem with Benadryl is that it has a very strong side reaction of producing drowsiness. So there is a danger of falling asleep at the wrong time (driving, operating machinery, etc) when you are under the influence of this drug. So my advice to you would be that if you are not taking it under the supervision of a physician, then you need to stop and get medical advice as soon as possible.
