Patients under anesthesia: A source of entertainment for doctors and nurses?!

Question: I recently asked - under another category - if doctors and/or nurses made fun of or dissed the patient under anesthesia, and everyone categorically agreed that they did.

I now feel compelled to take this question to the health section.

Do you think this is true?????????????

It happens, but not too often. We do look at tattoos, and might comment on those. Some people also make comments related to a person's size, especially if the anesthetized patient has to be lifted and positioned. And if you come to the OR and haven't bathed in a long time, we might make mention of it.

If someone is saying something inappropriate, I'll usually remind them that hearing is the last sense to go and the first to come back, and they might want to watch what they say.

We're just as likely to say nice things about people, though - comments about beautiful eyes, flat abdomens, how sweet the little old lady is, etc. Or caring comments: "look how thin she is, poor thing".

MOST of the time, we don't say anything at all, though. We've seen whatever you have before. We have lots of other things to chat about.

With humanity, anything is possible. So yes, it's probably true.

No. I think it's just a myth.

DOCTOR'S ON A ROUTINE OPERATION WILL TELL A JOKE TO EASE THE STRESS
AS I WAS TOLD THIS UPON THE REMOVAL OF CANCER THEY HAD A GOOD TIME AND TOLD ME ABOUT IT AFTER I WAS AWAKENED
WATCH M A S H AND YOU'LL SEE IT HAS TO BE FUNNY AT TIMES TO BE A JOB OR ROUTINE DAY AFTER DAY AFTER DAY

Yes, I think they do. They talk about the patient when they are in the lounge, at the desk anywhere they do not think the patient can hear. You know when the patient is under that they are talking and making jokes about them then also. What else are they going to do for all those hours. It just isn't right, but yes I believe it is done.

in the operating theatre, we have seen hundreds of people with something fatter/smaller/smellier/crustier/grosser... than yours. i really wouldnt be too concerned. we care about doing our job, not your bits and pieces.

No, if they get reported they will be in a lot of trouble, why risk your job for a laugh?

i think it depends on the personality of the doctor or the nurse. some may do that, and then i'm sure that others just find that sort of thing immature.
