Need to explain allergies to my team?!

Question: My coaches for my high school team want me to explain my life-threatening allergies to my teammates and show them how to use my epipen. The only problem is that I don't want them to feel sorry for me or be worried all the time about whether or not I will have a reaction. Any ideas?

This is actually a very good idea. When you show everyone, try to make it as relaxed, maybe even funny as possible. First, tell the team something like "ok, guys, I don't want to alarm you but coach wants me to show you all how to be a hero and save my life in case I am attacked by killer ________ " fill in the blank (bees, flowers, grass -- whatever you are allergic to). Ask them if they know anyone who is allergic to something and needs an epi pen. Chances are, SOMEONE will know or be familiar with this. Then let them know how RARELY this kind of thing happens to people and that they will probably never need to use it but just in case, you are letting them know. Tell them what the signs are that you are in trouble and need an epi pen, and how to use it, and what to do afterward. Answer any questions they have. I think after just letting them know, they will be fine and respect you probably even more.

This is something for the school nurse to handle. Ask her for her help in dealing with this. Im sure she will be happy to help you.

You do not have to tell anyone about your medical condition if you don't want to. This is your right. It is a legal violation under the HIPPA laws. If you want to tell them explain that it is a condition where your body over-reacts to a foreign substance in your body and can cause you airway to tighten making it difficult to breath. Tell them that if it happens there is an injection that you or they can give you to stop your body's reaction.
