It's so weird, I have a craving to eat dirt?!


Question: Why is that?
I'm not pregnant, but I think it's because just recently my period stopped but it was 3 weeks long which is obviously longer than normal

Thats good your senses are working so well, the body and people in general have a strange way of seeking out what they need. I have heard of that before, but I'm not sure what it could be, I checked my herbs book too... See what dirt may be high in, is it actually iron?

Most women crave dirt because they have a mineral or vitamin deficiency. This is a natural instinct. Try taking some good vitamins and maybe some iron pills. Could be that your period left you with little iron in your system. Hope you feel better!

you have deficieny of iron, your probably anemic and have bad nutrition getting check, eat more meats and stuff..

Iron deficiency is a possibility I'd suggest seeing a doctor to have it looked at, and to see if you do indeed have an iron deficiency and to prescribe you supplements.

The condition you're speaking of is called Pica.

Best advise is to check with your doctor.

yeah it's called pica. Don't give into your cravings without seeing a doc. Eating dirt can actually cause lead poisoning.

Yes. You are lacking iron in your diet. Take some Slow Fe before bed or eat more veggies... i.e. greens.

Iron defiencey! I went through this same thing, and finally had to ask my aunt & cousin who are both nurses. Came down to an iron defiency. and they put me on iron vitamins. I also had checked with my dr to make sure the vitamins wouldn't interfere with other med's. But yea if you crve dirt, it's the iron that you're craving! I find that when my body wants extra iron, I tend to eat home grown carrots, that still have a little dirt on them, or even a baker's potato still with a little dirt on it. Sounds weird for eating but it does help! Make appt with your dr for testing, and talk about what route is best for you wether vitamins or otherwise.

Try eating root vegetables like turnips, carrots, beets, or even peanuts. These can have an earthy taste to them and may be what your body is signalling you that you need more of in terms of nutrients.

Also try having a V-8. Many times, that will hit the spot and satisfies what your body craves.

It sounds like an iron deficiency. I have only heard of this in pregnant women though, you gotta start taking some vitamins. If you get put on iron supplements, be sure to keep them away from any kids in the house, too much iron is toxic and potentially fatal in children.
