Why do so many people die in December and January?!

Question: Seriously, it freaks me out. There seems to always be a spate of deaths at this time of the year. There's been a lot of famous ones recently and when I used to work in the adult care service this time of year was known, matter-of-factly, as "the cull".

Is there a particular reason why the mortality rate is so high during these two months?

Combine all the previous answers and I would say that's the reason. Holiday travel in bad weather means more accidents, more people in one place for celebrations during cold weather means colds and flu spreads quickly, cold weather and the holidays bring on depression and anxiety leading to suicide and murder.

Bad weather months+depression=suicide

Because it's a depressing time of year.

I think its because of the bad weather i.e. icy, foggy roads. There are more road accidents at this time of the year.

Because it's cold and crap, and people get depressed so their immune system is rubbish... plus it would really really suck to die in the height of summer!!

Yeah it's largely because there's a lot of people going on holidays at this time of the year, and they get drunk, and stuff happens. Road accidents are big factor in this.

high number of Flu and cold viruses going around and cold weather.

The cold weather plus the holidays combine to make a depressing time for people either lonely or already down on their luck.

Hell i thought it was only around here, glad you brought the subject up.I live in a small town and to date the 15th getting buried this morning ,since December,Been freaking me too. Most of em my age.

It has been known that their are more heartattack deaths in Dec. & Jan. due to overwhelming stress from the holidays.

it down to the weather. damp is one of the biggest cause of illness. that leads to fatalities. in the young and old.

Ignoring traffic deaths, there are weather reasons - hypothermia, heart attacks from shoveling snow, winter illnesses and shorter daylight periods and being alone for the holidays make people less willing to live, not suicides, but they are willing to just stop living. That last is called S.A.D. for Seasonal Affective Disorder.

These are the killing months. Older people contract pneumonia and don't have the strength to fight it. Some are living in cold houses and never get warm. When I was policing, this was way ahead the busiest time of the year. Falls on slippery foot ways, tripping in potholes etc causes old bones to break then The Old Man's Friend - pneumonia, carries them off. Some people have a choice of food or heat, they can't afford both. The British pensioner is getting less than European counterparts. Our houses are less well insulated against the damp/ cold climate.

It' cold & their old.
