Why do people insist upon showing up to work when sick?!

Question: I do not advocate skipping work, but I just cannot understand why people insist upon coming to work sick. I don't mean those showing up with minor sniffles. I mean the ones that look hideously sick. Take example the man who works a few desks from mine. He has a golf ball size swelling on his cheek next to his nose, has been coughing without covering his mouth, loudly blowing his nose, and moaning throughout the day. Why? All he says is well he can't afford to go the doctor. Okay. If you cannot afford the doctor I can understand that but please stay home then because I don't want to catch your disease. When I am ill I stay home. Working when you are sick does not do any good. 1. You are not up to your full potential when feeling down. 2. It takes you longer to get better without rest. 3. You expose coworkers if you are contagoius which you don't know unless you see a doctor

You're right, sick days are provided for a good reason, not just for when you don't feel like getting out of bed b/c you're too lazy.

most people really need the money or they don't have any sick days or personal days left

Great. Now tell the employers who have a low tolerance for absenteeism. People are afraid of losing their jobs.

I understand your perspective, but maybe he doesn't have any vacation days left and really needs to money. He might have a family to support or outstanding bills to pay. I'm sure he doesn't want to be there either.

If i go to work sick its usally to show them how sick I am and let them send me home. But some people sometimes just need the money no matter what. But you are right that sick contagoious coworkers should stay home

I agree, he would much rather be at home. I'm sure it's a matter of money and/or not wanting to lose his job. Wash your hands, load up on Zinc, and don't lick his phone.

When people go to work when they are sick its for two reasons
1) they don't have sick leave and need the money
2)their bosses are very strict of been out of work
