My sister wants to get gastric bypass?!

Question: My sis is 26 and weighs somewhere around 275 lbs. She asked me what I thought about her getting it and I wasn't really sure. It's kind of scary because it's a surgery and there could be complications, but then again, she has tried so many diets and can't seem to keep the weight off. I did some research online and it said that if your BMI is above 40, then you're a candidate. She's 5'7, so her BMI is 42. What do you think?

The first step is to make sure she goes to a very reputable doctor board certified and experienced in the procedure. He or she will not perform the surgery unless he or she determines your sister is a good candidate. They will require she go through psychological as well as physical testing. They will make sure she is doing this as a last resort and that dieting is not an option. Of course, there is risk with any surgery. Your sister will have to weigh that against the risk to her health that obesity poses. It is ultimately a decision she and her doctor will have to make. You should help guide her through the procedure then step back and be supportive.

i think it has to be a seriously last resort. it is very dangerous too.

i wouldn't do it unless i thought my health was very much in danger if i didn't

I think that whatever is done, it should definitely be done under the advice and monitoring of a doctor. There are other procedures that are less extreme and invasive than gastric bypass. My aunt was extremely overweight and had a procedure done where tubes were placed around her stomach. This greatly decreased her appetite, and she ended up losing a bunch of weight, to the point where she no longer needs to take insulin. So that might be an option to explore before going for the gastric bypass.

I know several people who has had the surgery, some have gained the weight back but some haven't, I know this one girl who is very small but she looks so sick. I know this sounds like an "easy" way but there so many complications. All the bypass does is cause to eat less, maybe she could just start with fixing her plate then putting 1/2 back, then after a few weeks cut it to 1/4. I have the same problem however of eating big portions and NOT exercising.

Well, my aunt got gastric bypass and it didn't really help her. So your sister needs to talk to an expert (and really make sure she does her homework, because it is risky and should only be done by an experienced doctor) and make sure she's in the right frame of mind for this to work. It isn't a cure-all, and it'll take a lot of discipline on her part.

But if she's sure this is what she wants and an experienced doctor agrees that she's a good candidate for it, than it might be a good option.
