Apart from taking pills, how do you get rid of a migraine headache?!

Question: I've already taken headache pills but they don't help that much. What else can I do for pain relief other than taking more pills?

Have you tried 'forehead' patches? or Migracool - they stick on your forehead and are supposed to reduce the pain and discomfort caused by migraine. My daughter is a sufferer, and finds them quite good - best of luck, be well

Go to a dark room and try to sleep it off. Unfortunately, there's not much else you can do for a migraine without medication.

stay off the PC, turn off all distractions, noise etc. Lay in a dark room, and place a cold flannell around your forhead. Drink plenty of water too, thins helps amazingly. Hope it helps you x x

Dark room, stay still, maybe damp towel on your forehead. HOWEVER, if you can BARE to be on the computer I'd suggest you don't have a migrane, you have a bad headache.

Although I don't have them often, I've had migranes, you wouldn't be sitting up and you wouldn't be able to look at a screen.

What sort of migraine do you have? I'm not being funny, but most people who have migraines couldn't possibly use a computer when they're having an attack.
It's probably best to make a non-urgent appointment to see your GP who can discuss your headaches with you.
If you don't want to do this, then ask your pharmacist for an over the counter drug called Imigran. It can help with certain types of migraine.

The problem with a migraine is that for some ppl like me your stomach shuts down and therefore you dont digest the pain killers and so get no relief. I also have an anti-sickness drug that means my tablets get digested. But other than the obvious, lying down in a dark room. or eating carbs like toast ect, there is only pain killers left. Some ppl say a nice walk helps. I went to see a neurologist and now take a preventer tablet every night. But sitting in an upright chair at the pc isnt going to help you. So pls go and relax.

Dark, quiet room, heat compresses, try to relax and sleep. This may take several hours or more.

Prescription medicines like imitrex can relieve many migraines within an hour. I suffered with horrible migraines for 20 years, before finally going to a doctor and getting a prescription. It was like a miracle for me.

Stop looking at a screen

gotobed
turn all the lights of close da curtains/or shut the blinds which ever
and close ur eyes and stay in da dark room for at least 1hr

Low carbing has caused my migraines to completely cease. I do not get them at all anymore.

There is a product called '4Head' (bright pink box) - you can get it in Boots, Superdrug, Tesco etc. It's the size of a lipstick and has a mint and menthol smell. It is like a good quality lip balm only you rub a little on your forehead - it gives a tingling sensation. I find it usually clears my headaches.

If your headache is caused by sinuses that haven't drained - leading to painful pressure - use a netti pot. Warm water poured into one nasal opening, tilt head, warm water comes out the other side. It was featured on Oprah 2 weeks ago, on Dr. Oz's show, and they flew off of the store shelves! Then, Vitamin C with Quercitin, Hesperidin and Rutin combined is a great daily supplement (a very affordable version of the combination is found at Great Earth Vitamins - buying them separately is much higher) and is a very effective chemical-free, non-drowsy alternative antihistamine - reduces swelling, and the synergy keeps bioflavanoids available for the body to use. Bioflavanoids' availability to the body decreases with age, so this is a great way for your brain to get what it needs. If you experience migraines in cold weather, then humidity is your friend - steam, humidifier, steamy beverages, etc. will hydrate your tight sinuses - I like taking a walk in the moist air. And if your job/life is stressful, and your neck muscles are tight, then gently lowering your head forward, while sitting up straight, until your chin touches your chest will loosen those tight muscles. Also, tilt your head to the side, as far as you can, then to the other side. Hope these help you to have a healthy and happy new year!

I suffered from migraine for many years after a road traffic accident in which my head ended up sticking, rather awkwardly I thought, through the windscreen of a car.

Sometimes I would literally bang my head against the bedroom wall to exchange the God awful 'brain pain' of the migraine for something more tangible, as it were!

The usual things helped:-

Darkness

Total silence

Relaxation techniques

Prayer

Sleep (drug induced if necessary - the best of the lot)

Distraction - anything that had to be done anyway - however dreadful the pain

Staying absolutely still - finding a position for my head and body whereby the pain was diminished - even slightly.

Doing headstands against a wall - blood rushed to my head - eased it a bit - if I could find the strength to do it (if you're not very fit or steady get someone to help you with this one!)

Allowing time to pass while 'accepting' the pain - yes there is pain - and eventually it will pass - meanwhile -

"God give me peace and easement of this pain"

- and protect me from the total idiots who think a migraine is just a fancy name for a bad headache!

- and from the same folks who think that those who suffer from any and every form of diagnosed mental illness are all epsilon semi-morons who should, in any event, pull themselves together or just die, so as to decrease the surplus population (apologies to Charles Dickens - think he would approve though!).

see you on the ice

I recently comforted a near neighbour who is as nutty as a fruitcake by confiding that I suffer from mental health problems!

Imagine my joy to hear her say to someone (overheard through my open bedroom window) ...

"He's insane you know!"

tee hee!

Do not cast YOUR pearls before SWINE!

i really just go to sleep and take a hot shower or hot bath and i wake up with out one oh and also you should just pray seriously prayer changes things and it helps me

Utilizing pressure points in your temples, behind your ears, and at the base of your skull will help but only if they're done correctly (otherwise you'll be in more pain than you were when you started).

They're good for the migraines and headaches that won't go away no matter what you do. I learned about them from my karate instructor. He says that pressure points were used in ancient China to cure just about everything. I've also heard about homeopathic practitioners using them as well.

Magnesium helps in some cases.
