Everyone is born with two tonsils. They are little lumpy things at the back of your throat, just behind the dangly thing (uvula). THey are an important part of your immune system, but sometimes they get chronically infected, and have to be removed. They don't like to remove them, but if it's been going on for over 12 months, the tonsils probably aren't going to get better.

Normally they just put you under anasthetic, and cut them out. It's a routine, very safe procedure.

Usually they just keep you in hospital afterwards for a few days to make sure you're all right. There can be some nausea afterwards, but they just give you an injection of an anti nausea drug and you're normally fine. Fluids and soft foods are the best thing to eat afterwards, but stay away bananas. THey are very astringent on your throat and the pain is pretty horrendous.

The pain of having the tonsils removed isn't that bad. You'll only really need mild analgesics for the next few days. If you look at the back of your throat after you'll see big white patches. That's just the skin reforming in your throat and is harmless. It's totally normal and will look a bit like a mouth ulcer does.

Having them out doesn't make you any less likely to get bad sore throats, but at least it resolves the chronic infection. He will be fine. It's just like having a mole or something removed.

Best wishes

yea we have two...to help your friend just talk to him and let him know it will be find...millions of people have gotten there tonsils out and are perfectly fine

First, yeah we have 2 tonsils, one on each side of our mouth. And, what can you do to help your friend? Just give him words of encouragement like "you'll be fine", "it's a routine surgery", "millions of people have it every year and nothing goes wrong"........that sort of thing. He will most likely get to go home a couple hours after the surgery too so he won't have to stay overnight at the hospital. Tonsillectomies are done outpatient now usually. Tell your friend I said good luck and i hope the surgery helps him!
