Inflammation is actually the reaction caused by the immune system to any kind of trauma. It does 3 things --
Increases blood flow to the area
Increases the size of blood vessels to the area so that large molecules can reach the site and
Sends phagocytes to the area
These three cause the area the become swollen, inflamed and hot to the touch.

Gradually new cells are generated to replace the damaged cells and the body heals itself.
