It depends on the type of cough you have.

Is it productive (ie. do you cough up mucus)? Or a dry cough?
Depending on the type you can decided whether to supress or expetorate.
Coughing is pretty much the bodys way of clearing the airways. If your coughing up mucus thats a good sign! You dont want to suppress that sort of cough! However, if its exhausting you, you might want to remove the source of irritation. A simple method would be a hot inhalation (fill a bowl with boiling water and maybe some menthol of eucalyptus oil)...even rub some tigerbalm or vick rub on your chest. You can choose to suck a lozenge to soothe the airway and coat the source of irritation.
If you have a dry cough you can take a mucolytic (to loosen the mucus so you can cough it out) or an expectorant cough syrup. These contain guainfensin or bromhexine. Ask your pharmacist.
You can also use a cough supressant if you cant get to sleep...these usually contain codeine.

Good luck!

Also, just as an aside; see your doctor if symptoms dont clear up in 24hrs...you might have a secondary infection (from the cold) like pnuemonia...

Here are a few simple home remedies that will help to overcome cough. Have honey in a hot drink before bed time.To relieve fits of coughing due to dryness in the throat, suck a few pepper corns. Check out http://useinfo6.blogspot.com/ for more remedies and information.
