Why do my legs go to sleep when I sit cross-legged?!

Question: I never have this problem when sitting in a chair, but if I sit cross-legged (on the floor, on a bed, etc.) my legs immediately start going to sleep. Is this normal? I'm overweight, could that be a factor?

Yes, this is what happens when you compress the nerves in your legs and cut the circulation off to your legs.

If you are overweight it is NOT RECOMMENDED to sit cross legged because it can cause blood clots in your legs which can later break off and travel in your veins.

Start by exercising and watching your portion sizes...then the weight will come off and you will notice improved ability to sit cross legged without this side effect

No, probably not a weight issue. My legs go numb when I cross them also. It's probably because the nerve in the leg is being compressed when one thigh is on top of the other

You're cutting the circulation off to your legs, which is why this happens. I doubt your weight has anything to do with it, since I know this happens to many people, skinny or overweight.

By crossing your legs you temporarily disrupt the blood suppy to your lower body. And yes being over weight may cause this effect since you may have partially blocked veins which also cause the blood flow to be slowed down even further when you cross your legs.

happens to everyone
reduced blood circulation
