Settle an argument please?!

Question: For those with mid-level intellegence and above only to settle argument?
Ok...here's the point of contention...I am arguing with a friend over the plausability of this issue...(I think it is not possible).

Take a 5'3 woman who weighs 125lbs aged anywhere from 25-35 (or any similar height-to-weight ration) she is not fat, but could stand to lose 10+lbs in the sense that there is no definition and while not fat, she is flabby and without tone. If she works out 3x per week 30-45 minutes per day on a treadmill at an average speed of 4 miles per hour (a distance of 2-2.5 miles) will she show markable, visible (must be visible) improvement in her tone and musculature after 12-15 weeks? I say no way that while the exercise is better than no exercise it is not enough to change anything about her appearance physically and will probably not really ever do much to it that is visible.... Agree or disagree and why?

PS...pick me, pick me and say no way (just kidding - real answers only)

First of all, from a logical standpoint, you're only considering one variable in an equation. If the subject burns 150 calories during this exercise with no increase in food consumption, there could be a reduction of less than two pounds after 15 weeks. I don't believe this would translate into any visible difference or build any appreciable muscle mass. It may tone the legs slightly and have a positive effect on cardiovascular fitness.
If this was continued for 52 weeks the subject could potentially lose almost 7 pounds which would start to affect appearance in a positive way and maybe motivate them to do some other training to tone upper body muscles or ramp up training to a higher intensity level.
If diet was modified even slightly either way it could intensify the loss or wipe it out completely.

she wouldnt lose any 10 pounds but she would lose a few :D

I can only tell you from experience what happened with me.........

I was 50 lbs overweight when I joined Curves. I went 3-4 times/week and on the alternate days I used a 5 lb weighted hoola hoop for 20 minutes (started at 3 mins/day and added a min/day until I got to 20 mins). I did not change my diet other than perhaps I drank more water than I normally would.

In 12 weeks I had only lost 13 lbs but I had lost 21 1/2" overall (upper arms, bust, waist, hips, thighs) and dropped 3 clothes sizes!!

I was amazed that there could be such a noticeable difference in such a short period of time and only 13 lbs weight loss.

My body looked toned and fit and I felt heaps better mentally and physically!

I disagree with you.

Although she's already a healthy weight and doesn't have a lot of fat to lose, that type of exercise, which is a fast walking pace, is very good for fat-burning and cardio-vascular fitness while being "low impact".

I won't do the figures as they really would vary a lot from person to person, but there would likely be a small improvement in overall tone but it's not really "muscle building" exercise. Still, I think it would be noticeable, if minor, and it certainly would if she did it over a longer period than 12 weeks and upped the frequency and duration a little.
