Should people who damage their bodies purposely get free health care?!

Question: For example, when they smoke -they KNOW they are taking a risk of getting cancer. When they drink like horses they KNOW they are damaging their liver. They read the general surgeons warnings...right?

No, people who smoke should not be eligible for treatment of disease brought on by smoking. This is a huge issue with government programs.People who get govt subsidized health care cant afford private insurance, but can afford cigarettes or alcohol. These habits lead to all kinds of nasty health issues that should not be covered by Medicaid.I know this will not be a popular view here, but these are the facts.

From a humanitarian point of view, you should never turn your back on anybody, no matter what their past is. Also, it is important to realize that people do develop dependencies to substances and it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to stop without treatment. If you want to help solve the burden that these people put on public health care, support drug and alcohol treatment centers so that these folks can stay healthier and not have become a patient.

It isn't right for people to mooch, no matter what. If someone were to drink and destroy their liver because they wanted to just have fun and figured they could just get a free transplant, then they don't deserve to be cared for on the public dollar. However, I can guarantee you that not many people think like this. Livers and lungs don't grow on trees and nobody wants to go through chemo or transplant surgery just so they can party like a rockstar.

No,at first I was going to say yes thinking these people had mental health issues should be able to see a Psychiatrist for free..People that smoke and drink NO, they know what they are doing with every drink and every puff.

You are correct that people DO things that are flat out stupid. The list is too short, however, so probably EVERYONE does at least one flat out stupid thing to his body. That doesn't excuse it or mean UHC makes any sense at all.
As there is no such thing as "free" anything, what makes the most sense is to OFFER (not force, ok Hillary & Mitt?) everyone a catastrophic health insurance plan with some preventative medicine benefits to do it up right.
That plan is here:
QUALITY, ACCESSIBLE, AFFORDABLE health care for all.
That means preventative care (physical with follow up). Real medication (no Medicare "donut holes" the really ill are ripped off again.) No bogus ridiculously low "caps" on needed medical procedures. No abuse of the ER. No paying for the silly with the sniffles to go to the doc for free. No more bankruptcies over medical bills. I want THIS plan that ends abuse of the taxpayer, takes the burden off employers, provides price transparency, and ends the rip-off of the US taxpayer at the hands of greedy insurance CEOs (which has been repeatedly documented).

Read the PDF, not the blurb, for the bulk of the plan. Book is searchable on Amazon.com
