Waking up in the middle of the night and I cant move..?!

Question: Sometimes, during the middle of the night, I wake up -- well sort of, Im in more of a dreamlike state -- and I cannot move ANY part of my body, I cant talk or anything. Sometimes I am able to "awake" myself from this AWFUL paraysis by sheer thinking power, but most of the time, I cant. Its super scary though. What is this? What does it mean? Is it dangerous? and what can I do to eliminate it?

It is a commmon and natural phenomenon. I'm giving you a couple of links to read about it. Its called sleep paralysis.

Do you feel as though there is a presence in the room with you? I've heard that is pretty common with the symptoms you are describing. I forget what it's called though.

When you enter the deepest part of the sleep process called REM your muscles relax and it's almost like you're paralized and that even includes your vocal chords.Waking during the REM stage doesn't happen very much but it does happen and it's not dangerous it's just scary. You don't have anything to worry about but if it keeps bothering you ask your doctor about having a sleep study done.
