How to deal with social anxiety?!


Question: First of all i have social anxiety, but the thing is whenever i go outside people just can't stop starring at me. I mean i shower everyday and brush my teeth, I have a pretty normal hygen but i just can't seem to know what their all starring about. It really pains me. Because of it i rarelly go outside, i even cut school today because i know when i will go to school it will be the same thing again. I have taken anxiety pill but they don't help. I have attempted suicide twice. I just don't what to do anymore. By the way i'm 20, male living in NYC. Even taken the subway is hell because i hate having to deal with people starring at me all the time. I feel like i'm not wanted. This has been going on for the past 12 months.

I have the same problem but I am still at school. I can't go outside at all because people stare at me - and I don't know why they're staring! If I knew, it'd make life so much easier. Think about it though they could stare for so many reasons - because they think you're hot - because they remember you from somewhere or so many other reasons. If i knew you we could walk down that subway together and not care who stared cos we'd both have the same feelings. uh.. i suggest you see a doctor who can refer you to a therapist for cognitive behaviour therapy (i take it , and it helps.)

It shows a lot about about you that you are looking for help. While Yahoo, might seem like a good start, I think you need to find a good therapist. What you described is not something that will just go away, and it sounds like really want some help.

One thing I would suggest is finding ways to distract, or self-sooth yourself while out in public such as listening to your ipod or deep breathing.
Pay attention to what helps and what doesn't...
Is it easier if you have a friend with you?

Also, Remember, you are not alone. A lot of people suffer from social anxiety...

First of all i understand how you feel as i have suffered from the same condition. One thing i can tell you is that you MUST learn to relax. Do not become pre-occupied with thoughts that people are staring at you. You will always be looking for this, and as human beings, we all tend to look at people and then our minds focus on something or someone else. You must try and not to avoid situations as i can guarantee you that this will make your world so small and you eventually will become a shut-in. Try to see if there are any groups in your area with people suffering from the same problem..You would be very, very surprised at how many people actually suffer from this problem. Do not give up and know that there are many others out there just like you. Try and see if you can get some form of cognitive behavior therapy. Make sure you let others know how you feel.
