How long does a cold keep someone out of work?!

Question: I gotta cold and left work early and am worried about calling out of work tomorrow cause I dont need to upset anyone. But, I also dont want to make others sick. But, its JUST A cold. Whats some good criteria for calling out of work with a cold. How long?

Hi.....some companies have absenteeism policies. Make sure you know if yours does. Many times if you are off for a number of days (many times it is 3) you have to return with a physician excuse.

Otherwise, you need to do what you feel is the right thing to do.
Definitely call in, however. You do NOT need to spread your germs about and I'm sure they will appreciate your thoughtfulness. You may need to take about 48 hours of total rest (sleep as much as you can), take in fluids, cold medicines and SLEEP. Sleep is when your body repairs itself and heals itself. Let it do it's job. If you are not better by the 2nd day off, you need to call your MD and get in to see him. Let him do his stuff and you'll have a paper to take in to your job if they require one.

I've kinda made this long. Just so you know there is no criteria that I know of. Only you know when you are too sick to work. A "cold" can turn into pneumonia overnight because your body is in a weakened state. Do not take a cold lightly.
Besides, you don't know that it is just a cold, do you?

When you call off, do it yourself. ANYBODY WHO READS THIS: NEVER, NEVER, have someone call off for you if you are an adult. Doesn't look good at all!

Good luck, guy. Feel better fast
I am an RN

its pretty unnecessary actually..if youre not feeling bad then why stay out? if youre worried about other people just make sure you sneeze into a tissue [and dont leave them laying around] wash your hands constantly or use hand sanitizer and keep taking cold medicine.

if it's only a cold there's no reason to miss work. unless u have headaches, fever, etc accompanying the cold.

If it's just a cold and not the flu - back to work, I'm afraid!

Keep some hand sanitizer and kleenex near your desk and people will keep their distance. Save the "calling in sick" stuff for later, you might really need it later on. Also, it's much better to show up and get sent home than to call in.
