Why can't I fall asleep until 12 or 1 am?!

Question: Every night irregardless of when i woke up that morning I am not able to fall asleep until sometime between 12 and 1. But what is really odd is that I can take a nap around 4 and sleep for a couple hours and then still the time I can fall asleep at night is the same. I don't understand why it's the same for both situations and why I can never fall asleep before this. Just for info- I go to school everyday and get up at 6:45.

First of all, stop taking the afternoon nap if you are really wanting to get to sleep earlier. Most of the time its the mind that keeps us awake. Even if you are physically tired your brain just keeps going and going, especially if you are worried about school, friends or responsibilities. Take plenty of time getting ready for bed. Wash your face, brush teeth, put on lotion . . .etc . . . start to get your brain to slow down and focus on simple tasks. Make sure you are in comfortable sleeping clothes. When you go to bed try doing some mundane and even difficult task. Example: a cross word puzzle, suduko, reading something challenging, do a craft type project. Whatever it is, it should require your total concentration which leaves little room for you to think about all the other stuff. Soon you'll get bored or flustered and then it's time to shut off the lights. You'll fall asleep thinking abou the task. Another suggestion, instead of the afternoon nap go out for a brisk walk. It will ward off the sleepy feeling until you really want to sleep and help tire you out for late. If none of this works for you at least you'll be smarter from all the crosswords and you might drop a few lbs from all the walks. lol . . .good luck.

I suffer from chronic insomnia and and I suggest this book:

"Say Goodnight to Insomnia" -Gregg D. Jacobs, Ph.D.

You may have insomnia, check with your doc.

It's not insomnia, but a common problem that teenagers have. Their bodies don't release the sleep hormone until 12 am, regardless of what time they sleep to in the afternoon or how early they go to bed. Your body will not be sleepy until that time, so don't try to fight it.

This problem is so common that people think teenagers should go to school in the afternoon so they can sleep.

I'm not making this up; most countries have the teens go to school later in the day. It's not the teen's fault; no matter how early they go to sleep they end up just laying there doing nothing. I personally will be going to sleep at 1 am also.

ur body is used to the routine.. its like what u said u get up at a certain time aand go to sleep at a certain time..In order for A change u have to do it We as people believe wE will miss something sooo, thats why we stay up all night watching tv or whatever.. see for me it mY ALONE TIME .. For me to do whatever I WANT..

So you get up early enough. Are you active during the day? Are you burning enough energy? Go for a walk/jog late afternoon.
DO NOT take a nap in the afternoon at all. Do not eat too late at night - food = energy that will keep you awake. Some people do some reading in bed and it makes them sleepy.
Is something on your mind - bothering you? Do not drink chocolate or warm milk before you do to bed.

If sleep deprivation persists, seek MEDICAL help - be careful of sleeping pills!

It sounds weird, but if you are an adolescent, this is how sleep cycles change at this time in your life. That iis why school should start later for teenagers. A nap is a 20 minutes to a half hour, so if you are sleeping for a couple of hours, you are reinforcing a later bedtime. If you stay up past midnight it will be more difficult to fall asleep(it is like your body get's a second wind). Best thing to do would be not to nap and go to sleep at 9 or 10 for about a week. this will help your sleep cycle to adjust to you.

THERE ARE 3 TYPES OF INSOMNIA

#1 Can't fall asleep - it takes a really long time to fall asleep(over 45 minutes)
#2 Fall asleep easily, but wake up up hours before you are supposed to and you are not able to fall asleep
#3 Can't sleep at all and when you do sleep, you are constantly waking up.

It really sounds like you are going through a bout of insomnia. I have suffered with it for 20 years(all 3 types). It sounds like you might be stressed out about something and you can't fall sleep because you are thinking too much.

If you go to your Doctor and ask about the Hormone Tryptophan(found in turkey). It takes 2 weeks to become fully effective. It is non-addictive, non-habit forming. It helps a person fall into deep sleep more quickly than they would normally. It really helped me at certain times in my life. It might be all you need to get over this. Try relaxing before bed. Hot bath really helps. Don't think about things that might stress you out. If you can meditate. All these things will really help. Don't worry though it doesn't sound chronic, just situational.

Think of yourself as a battery...if you take an afternoon nap, then you are recharging a bit early so when it's bed time, you can't sleep because you still have energy. My tip would be not to take naps...only sleep when it's bedtime.
