I'm having my tonsils out next week, what can I expect?!

Question: I'm 28 so I hear it will be more painful for me because of my age. Also, how much pain can I expect to be in when I wake up? What were some of the things that made you feel better after and what kind of foods did you eat? Did the meds make you feel nausous? I'm a little nervous if you can't tell.

People say it's more painful but I'm not sure. When I had mine removed I was 7 years old and currently 13. My throat hurt as soon as I woke up so I was pratically crying but that made it hurt worst so I stopped. I ate popsicles, jello, and soup. They told me try not to eat or drink anything with milk since it causes snot which hurts really bad to try to get out. I freaked out because i saw these green things at the back of my throat that looks like mold but it was just scabs and i had just ate a green popsicle so don't freak if you see that it's normal. I was scared to but once they give you calming medicine you feel so out of it. They rolled me into the operating room and they put patches on me that monitored my heart and breathing so it wasn't so bad and then they put this sleeping gas mask on me that smelled like strawberry and makes you kinda dizzy and sort of like drunk but you fall asleep quickly and I totally forgot i was having surgery then i woke up in the recovery room and my throat was hurting so bad i didn't want to eat or drink anything. That's about it though so if you have any other questions e-mail me at tiger_brandy1994@yahoo.com
Good luck! :]]

A lot of Jello and liquids.

Ice cream feels gooooooooooooood.

all the ice cream you want with no guilt woo-hoo!

they made my brother eat icecream. but some people gag when they eat it after their tonsils are out.

paaaaiiiin

lots and lots of ice cream lol don't know anything else about it sorry.

it will hurt and not be fun but after the first two weeks it gets better and you can eat real food again and it will be alright i had em out at 11 and I stopped getting sick and all that stuff so ya

You can expect: sore throat, not being able to talk, dissiness, headaches and sleeping a lot will help you get better.

Don't worry, too much. It will be like a bad sore throat - painful swallowing, and you will need to stay away from solid, spicy or hot (temp) foods. Follow your dr.'s instructions and take it easy for a few days.

Expect quite a bit of pain. The hospital will tend to give a lot of soft and cold foods such as ice cream. It is definitely not a fun experience.

My aunt had hers out a few years ago, and her mouth was really sore around her lips where they used something to keep her mouth open. She had an extremely sore throat and could only eat soup, thought she didn't feel like she wanted to have anything, so you'll probably need someone who'll tell you when to eat, whether you like it or not! lol
good luck =]

It is more painful with age but it also depends on your pain barrier. I was thirteen when I had them out and I was really groggy when I woke up and I got sick but I didn't remember that happening at all, I kind of didn't eat for about 5 days and I was fairly miserable but it was totally worth it. I'd say Iv been sick about 5 times since then and that was 4 years ago. If you feel like you can eat try Custard, Ice Cream, Jelly, Soggy cereal. Just cold things in general. But whatever you do do not for get to take your pain medication and take it on time cause if you don't believe me you will regret it.

I had my tonsil out when I was 25. They gave me a prescription for Tylenol with codeine, I think. If they give you the same one, be careful. Make sure it is the suspension and not just the liquid. I started out with the liquid, which had alcohol in it, and it delayed my recovery because it really hurt my throat everytime I took it. The suspension is more like regular children's tylenol. Once I got that, I got better quicker. Also, I drank a lot of water and gatorade. Hot chocolate was also pretty soothing. I know it sounds weird, but it was. The doctor will give you a sheet with all the information you need and what to expect. It will be worth it in the end, trust me! Good luck.
