There are a couple.
If they are checking for possible blood clots or an aneurysm in the legs, arms, neck or even the heart, they usually use a Doppler like device that is attached to a monitor that has sound, much like a sonogram of an unborn child. It will show in color on the screen of red (blood flow away from the heart) and blue (towards the heart) and will show any deviation of the vessel like blood clots or an enlarged or stretched out vessel (aneurysm) caused by weakening of the vessel wall. If it is being done on the heart it can also see if there is a malfunction of the valves in the heart that cause what is called regurgitation, which is nothing more than poor timing of the valve that allows the blood coming from the lungs with fresh oxygen to mix with blood coming into the heart to be sent to the lungs to receive oxygen (That test is called an echo-cardiogram). Another test would be a vienagram or arteriogram. That is done by injecting a inert (safe to the body) radio active isotope into the blood stream and monitoring the flow and distribution of the Isotope under X Ray. The body picks up the isotope differently, in different densities of tissue, like for instance a fat cyst is less dense than a fibroid cyst, so the uptake of the isotope would look different.
Don't worry neither one is painful I have had both kinds several times. It is really amazing what they can see.

There are all kinds of test depending on where they are looking. With the heart it is a treadmill. With other areas it is normally a reactive dye injection with an active MRI. The only problem I had from the dye injecton was a warm feeling, but not serious. It felt good since the air-conditioner was set to cold because of the machinery. They may even start an IV so they can get a full flow test with the MRI. Just relax and make the best of it. Hope all is well.
