How do I quit smoking without getting ratty and irritable?!

Question: two times my friend has made me start smoking again as apparently "it makes me no fun"
Last time I fell out with him massively because he pronounced the "choo" of his sneeze to loudly.
I know it's a filthy habbit, but it makes me look cool and sophisticated. How can I quit when I don't really have the willpower and get withdrawl really badly?

yes, you do look cool. plus, smoking desensitizes the taste buds so even nasty chicks/dudes can be mouthed expanding the range of acceptable 'friends'

as far as withdrawal problems, try getting your nicotine from gum or patch. those are no cool, but you can be discrete about it. also, there are newer mood enhancer meds that you probably have covered by your NHS. they're supposed to help people quit smoking by making them less irritable.

i would love to know the answer to the same question and how to stop without gaining weight?

Get help from a rehab? Smoking in opinion does not make some1 look cool or sophistacated.

Maybe you can't quit without the side affects but it is WORTH IT! If your friend 'makes' you smoke then he is not a very good friend.

Niamh: It's better to be fat than have lung cancer.

go on a vacation to hawaii.

quit whilst basking on the beach...etc.

should be a bit easier i should think...

SEX and LOTS of it.

Take 20 packs of cigs and slowly wean yourself off of them by only allowing yourself to moke less than the day before.

Get Alan Carr's book Easy Way to Stop Smoking.
Bl00dy brilliant.

my psychology teacher advised my friend to stop smoking by relating cigarettes to something he doesnt do very often. For instance, if u're not a very big fan of ginger tea, only smoke while u drink ginger tea. after a while ur habit will be to smoke while drinkin ginger tea and if u dont like to drink that u wont smoke that often anymore

smoking is nasty. It's not sophisticated! You're white trash.

isnt wanting to live longer willpower enough... having lung cancer, mouth cancer, gang green ect isnt cool buddy, dont listen to your friend, hes the one digging your grave. take up sumthing a lil more healthy.. chewy is a good substitute it makse you look just as cool and its healthier.

Try tapering off. It has been proven that people who slowly stop (try one less ciggie per day, or even per week, at first) rather than quitting "cold turkey" have greater success.
I tried quitting more times than I can count in over 20 years, and discovered the book "Quit and Stay Quit." Through the use of journaling, learning information about what smoking does to you, 12 step type approaches, and tapering off slowly, I managed to stop smoking for good. This was 9 years ago, and I can't even remember what it felt like to smoke, at this point. I sure can't see myself going back!

you can start with smoking still and every 2 months delete one cigarette from your habit. for ex, if you smoke 10 cigarettes a day, just go down to smoking 9 every 2 months. Before you know it, you will be cutting down gradually and your body won't know it, because it is gradual. Nicotine gum only makes you crave more.

First off smoking does not make anyone look cool. How does your friend (no friend in my opinion) make you start smoking again? If you do not have the desire to quit then it is a waste of time because success is doubtful at best.
I quit smoking 6 years ago (after smoking for 30+ years) and I did it rather easily. I purposely did not get a flu shot in 2001 and caught the flu. Then, when my symptoms were at their absolute worse I went outside and lit up a Marlboro Red and inhaled deeply. I imagine it would be the equivalent of 'sucking on the end of a flamethrower". It hurt like hell. In a few days when I got to feeling better every time I got a craving I just thought back to the last sensation I got from smoking (extreme pain) and that did the trick. I still get occasional cravings but carry sugar free (0 calories) mints to pop in my mouth in lieu of a cigarette. After a while I could not stand the smell of cigarette smoke. Good luck should you decide to do it. Plus take all the funds wasted on smokes and put them aside in a savings account and watch the money pile up! Mostly it is mind over matter. For withdrawal the nicotine patches should cut down on those symptoms.

Wow. You have terrible friends.
They are urging you to basically kill yourself.
Smoking does nothing for you but break down your body.

I.M.O, You should ditch those friends, or next time they say you're no fun for smoking, tell them, "Sorry, but I like living".
I feel bad that you think it makes you look cool, but speaking from a 19 year old girl - women think its disgusting... unless they are smokers themselves. Most of my friends refuse to date smokers. It's a sign of weakness.

I've known smokers, and I can't stand being around someone who smokes alot. Even when they aren't smoking - they stink like the smoke so bad. If you hang around a group of smokers or get in a smokers car with like an expensive leather jacket - you're screwed. It sticks to the material and you have to get it dry cleaned.

Anyways - I really hope you can kick this habit. The best way to help your will power it to not be by temptation. I say wing yourself off the cigarettes. Start smoking less of them everyday.
Then start with the gum. I'm told it works very well. They also said that it was a habit to have something in their hands because they were so used to the cigarette. It drove them crazy when they were stopping and made them antsy. So he discovered those little suckers called dumdums. He'd chew some gum when he really wanted a cigarette and suck on a dumdum :)
It worked too!
Good Luck!!!!

If you really think that smoking makes you look cool and sophisticated, then smoking may be only one of your problems. Anyone old enough to retain information for more than a minute knows that smoking kills you and the people around you. There is nothing cool nor sophisticated about that. Additionally, "looking" cool and sophisticated is not the same as "being" cool and sophisticated. Being able to control your emotions and not acting like a jerk while quitting smoking - that is being cool and sophisticated.
You have to go into the quitting process knowing that it is not easy. You've already tried and now have a good idea of the hurdles you have to get over. You now know that you have to control your behavior. You now know that some of your friends do not want to support your efforts to improve yourself, so you'll have to ask them to either help or leave you alone.
I hear that those patches work, but will power and the desire to stop I think are the biggest component to quitting smoking.
Good luck.

If you really want to, you can do it. Getting nasty is a way of punishing those who are encouraging you to quit, when you really do not want to. NO one "Makes" you start again. Just say " I have quit- if I am a little edgy, it will get better." Bear with me.
The folks who got you to start again probably will not be around at your funeral.

I quit smoking and it was the best thing ever. I wish I had never started. I did it not only for myself but for my family. Think of all the money you could be saving, your life, and your family. Not much more to think about is there? Take up a hobby. Maybe chew gum for awhile until the urgency of having a cigarette subsides. So many people smoke but really what are they doing it for? What do you get out of breathing in toxins and just expelling it out into the air? Honestly. It's just a waste of your money in the end. Once you stop smoking you'll feel better not only about yourself but you'll feel better!! Also.. if it's your friends.. Your true friends should want what's best for you, and your health.. Not what's best for them.

Allen Carr's "Easyway to Stop Smoking" is an excellent book. It didn't help me, but of the ten people I know of who have read it, 8 have quit. (I'm one of the other two). It costs about the same as 3-4 packs of cigarettes, so it's really not even that much of an investment.

You may have to get it through a UK bookseller, though. That's what I had to do. The tobacco companies have done an excellent job of not letting it get sold in the U.S.
