Do people that have cut themselves once, likely to cut again?!

Question: My friend told me she has cut herself last night. She said she cut herself about mid-last year and I'm worried that she might still be cutting herself. So, are people that have cut theirself once, or twice likely to cut again?
Sorry if there is a question like this already. I've been searching on this topic everywhere, and have been getting no results. Thanks.

In what way did your friend tell you? She could be seeking attention or crying out for help or rescue.

Depending on her reason for cutting and the results she gets from it, will determine her likeliness of doing it again in the future.
Chances are, if she's a cutter, then she's injured herself on many more occasions that she simply hasn't told you about.

Self-injury isn't *usually* a sign of suicidal ideation. It's a coping mechanism that some of us have developed for dealing with emotional stress or trauma. Have you ever seen a cartoon where one character complains of a headache and another one stomps on their foot to make them forget about their head lol. Cutting, in a way, works like that.
A cutter is usually clinging to life and happiness the only way they know how. And the flood of endorphins makes it a quick fix for difficult situations and an easy addiction.

Be there for her without judgment. Don't make her promise to never do it again (chances are, if she's in a very bad place right now, it could be the only thing keeping her grounded and sane and possibly alive).
When she's doing better emotionally (health-wise etc), help her come up with ideas that could help in a safer fashion.

Google "self-injury". There's many forums out there you can direct her to for further help on ending the habit (if she even has one).

umm, ur friend might be suicidal, i suggest tell an adult before she winds up dead

Depends on the person definatly. Some people will cut once or twice and never do it again, but some people will continue doing it. You should definatly talk to her about it and tell her that she needs to stop. Its a very serious thing to cut. Tell her parents if she doesn't listen to you. She might just be doing this for attention though. Best of luck!*

There is a possibility she may do it again, since self-inflicted injury is a type of mental disorder where they are trying to deal with serious past issues or self-punishment.

Its very likely. Even if they want to stop its addicting. Im to scared to even think about it agh.
