How good are MRI-type machines these days?!

Had an MRI on my C3 through C6 area of my neck. It was incredible that I could see my own spinal cord, the sheath around it and the individual cervical vertabrea. There was a top view, a side view, a cut away view... Incredible...
I was really impressed with the image quality and the ability to zoom in/out and rotate...
I'm not aware if they operate in real time, I don't think so.
I just know that the MRI is LOUD! You get headphones, but man is it loud, about 15-20 minutes of what sounds like loud buzzing/banging/burping...
im a labrat. i go into an mri machine at least once per year. their research is "memory & aging". you may not belive this but i think having my brain exposed to heavy electromagnetic fields is making me smarter. i'm not kidding.-blurey
