Yes, it is. Not exactly the same type as used in automobiles, but still freon. There are many different types.

All refregerants are using freon, it is a new type now and safer or something. These are in sealed units and do not escape into air at all unless punctured . It can harm you if there is a fire and the freon is burning ,very dangerous. Dont' worry about fridges and stuff ,sealed units.
