Stress and anxiousness....?!

Question: ok....i get really stressed out from time to time. i also get very anxious...to the extent that physical symptoms appear. the thing is i'm a postgrad student. when i go to the GP for a checkup...would he be able to prescribe something...or will he just tell me to get some help in developing better coping strategies since im a student? but the stress and anxiousness isnt present 24/7, but appears in insignificant situations.

Try to see a psychiatrist who will take your symptoms seriously & be more willing to prescribe meds. If you go to your regular MD make very clear all your symptoms especially the physical ones.
I presume the insignificant situations are not that insignificant or that you are obsessing about your worries & stress.

In the meantime, try deep breathing: Inhale thru your nose; exhale thru your mouth; rest; each for a count of 3. Do for 5 minutes at a time. Be sure your stomach inflates when you inhale & deflates when you exhale.

Good luck with your schooling.

I assume he would first give you coping strategies... maybe a very small over the counter drug. But, if it continues then he would probably prescribe you something.

As a post grad student, you certainly are encountering a lot of stress. However, if it goes beyond stress to the point of baseless anxiety attacks, your GP certainly should prescribe something, at least for use in the short term. If he/she tries to brush off your concerns, find another doctor. I'm not talking about pill shopping, but some doctors -old school- still tend to dismiss emotional problems because you're female, a student, or elderly. It's ridiculous, but the habit persists. I recently fired my doctor because he wouldn't refer me to an in network accupuncturist for my fibromyalgia. He wanted to give me pills and I wanted a clear head and to try the alternative. Now I'm almost pain free and NO drugs...so shop around. /some doctors still have a god complex.
