Is it possible to experience withdrawls from sugar?!

Question: I have given up sugar for lent, so am on my 5th day. From about the 3rd day I developed a sore throat, runny nose and flu like aches. I am wondering if this is to do with giving up sugar (I was consuming quite alot before hand). I would be particuarly interested to hear from anyone who has done research into this subject. I have had so many people try to tell me giving up sugar is to difficult, and extreme, so am starting to wonder if sugar is a much bigger and addictive problem than I first thought, and am starting to realize just how much people have been brainwashed by the media and society into thinking consuming so much is 'normal'.

People who suddenly attempt sugar withdrawal are likely to have a few weeks of poor energy, cravings for sugar-loaded foods, and depression. Some also have flu-like symptoms when undergoing sugar withdrawal. I used to work at a doctors' practice and the doctors there used to call sugar 'white poison', and the very word 'sugar' was considered a swear word! Read more about sugar withdrawal on the sites below. Good luck!

Hi,a sudden stop of anything can give you with drawal
symptoms especially if taken regular.

Yes...read "Skinny B*tch," they talk about how research shows your body gets addicted to different food items, you'll feel gross for a week while your body gets rid of the stuff and learns to live will out it, then you'll feel tons better.

Yes you can suffer but suddenly not taking sugar. Your glucouse level may have dropped too low. This will give you headache and general aches. You should have a blood test to see if you are doing yourself any damage. Check with you practice nurse.

Sugar supply's energy more than any other food. I feel listless, bad-tempered and horrible if i don't have sugar, i need at least something sweet everyday not fruit etc but sugar in my coffee etc.:)

why not try nutrasweet, or aspartame (equal) , or splenda, or sweet & low for substitutes, then maybe you wont withdraw as much.

yes you can, try and find a replacement if it helps.. :) it'll all be over soon so don't worry!
