Well, sometimes honesty is the best answer. I know that if I requested a day off (even up untill the same day) that my boss would allow me to take the day for exam studying.
Don't go with a death in the family, that just turns out bad. I would most likely go with some type of sickness involving diarrhea and or vomitting ("It's just not e coli unless its coming out both ends" - Dr. Cox from Scrubs) Anywho... you could be creative, maybe something about a pet being sick, taking it to the vet. Whatever floats your boat

You have a job with people depending on you if you can't handle working and going to school you need to decide whats more important to you. and as far as the exam aim sure you had more then one day to study for it. Get your life in order now before you lose your job and flunk out of school
