If it's prescribed for a certain condition and they use it for said condition; it is perfectly justified.

If they take it more often, in greater dosages, or in combination with other meds in order to increase its potency; that's abusing the medication.

If they aren't taking it for a condition; it's recreational drug use.

You can be addicted to the medication in any scenario - as can you abuse them or use recreationally without becoming an addict. It's when you consistantly take it inappropriately due to a feeling of "needing it" that one gets labeled an "addict".

I see drug addiction as a mental dependency. They don't "need it" - they "want it". A part of me feels sympathy for the void in their life that drives them to it. I also feel it is a choice. However, if they're not hurting anyone besides themselves.. I believe it's their decision to make.

Oh, and Xanax and Valium are anti-anxiety benzos - not narcotics. (And... if you're talking about Health, I'd say he was an abuser; not an addict.)

if you must take these to get by and cope with life you are addicted. Get professional help before its too late! Been there done that!!!!

my father in law took vicodin for many years becuase of rhumetoid (sp) arthritis. It's MESSED UP his lower GI tract. These drugs are very serious and have serious long term repercussions. I'm not sure what you're asking, but I'll say that if a dr. is prescribing a drug to someone, it is for a reason. I've seen people having to live in/with pain, and it's terrible. Those meds can be abused, though, and if you're concered, you need to talk to someone. Maybe you can call the drs office the meds were prescribed from. Talk to the nurse or nurse practicioner. Do not judge too quickly, you never know what the curcumstances really are.

drugs should be avoided when optional and closely monitored by doctor when prescribed.
i do not judge people by the meds they take, why should i?
