Drug test puss?!

Question: my friend got an infection in a piercing so they took a swab of puss and are testing it for what type of infection it is. she's kinda freaked though that they might find out she had weed because of the sample. will they test for that? can they tell her parents? (isnt there doctor patient confidentiality?) and she's already upset enough so please dont judge her. (she's sitting right next to me)

Okay. In all the years I've sent off cultures, I've never added on a drug screen. If they wanted to test her for drugs, they would have asked for blood or urine sample. I wouldn't worry about the culture revealing the drug use, but, I will tell you that your friend needs to stop smoking pot. I'm not judging anyone here, I just used to work with people with drug and alcohol issues and I've seen what it, and yes, even 'just smoking pot', does to lives. Worrying about getting caught is the least of her concerns- its the tip of the iceberg. As far as the confidentiality issues are concerned, it depends. Better to get off the pot and stay away from drugs. Good luck.

No, this sample is to look for the bacteria not drugs.
don't worry.
The doctor would have to order a urine test or a blood test but not from pus.

she ought be more worried about the infection. I highly doubt they would check for thc because of that .

There is no possibility that the test they did which was a culture could reveal any drugs in her system. This can only be tested for using blood, urine, or stool.
