Taking 2 hours or more to get to sleep every night? what shall i do?!

Question: every night it takes me about 2 hours or more to get to sleep?
it has always taken me a while to get to sleep. ive never been one of those people who close their eyes and they are gone!
i have tried counting sheep, made my mind go blank, counting stars because i am 13th floor of a tower block so i can see them above my head through my window!!
umm what else can i do? i do have worries and alot of things going on in my life at the moment.
how do i stop this and how can i get to sleep quicker?

Some helpful hints from someone who also cannot sleep:

Make sure you don't do anything in the bedroom besides sleep and sex. No TV, no reading, nothing. That makes the bedroom a place that your body recognizes as "sleep place". When you are in there, your body will know it is time to sleep.

Meditate. I have used guided meditations from Doreen Blumenfeld with some success. They are a little hokey, but they helped. Simonette Vaja has a good sleep one, too.

Don't do anything particularly stimulating after about 7pm. No video games, no exercise, no caffeine, nothing like that. Allow your body time to wind down.

Try melatonin and valerian root supplements. They are supposed to clear the mind and aid in sleep.

Finally, at least lay there and let your body rest. Even if you can't sleep, you can get some physical rest for your body.

Take medicine, or drink a warm glass of milk.

god, I wish I knew the answer to that...
I have to listen to my iPod for at least two and a hlaf hours before I even BEGIN to feel sleepy...
guh, I'm sure we'll grow out of it.
good luck!

FIND A NICE GUY TO CUDDLE UP WITH
CUP OF WARM MILK

Exercise drains your energy and helps you sleep quicker try doing exercise for example run up the stairs to the 13the floor everyday and by night you will be exhaused and will sleep like a baby =)

Try listening to something relaxing and soothing, like birdsong.

I have always had the same problem... and still do, so I am watching this question. I know this is a crap answer lol

Here are some ideas:
1.Tire yourself out before going to bed by doing some physical exercise.
2. Have a bath in the evening and unwind....
3. Have a hot drink before bed; like green tea, hot lemon etc...(nothing milky)
4. Read in bed

Or try this exercise I learnt at a yoga class as a kid....
Lay down, and slowly feel each part of your body sink into the mattress: legs, torso, chest, arms and head. You body should stay completely still and by the time you start thinking about relaxing your head, you should be asleep.

Hope this helps
:)

it happens to me, drink chamomille tea, linden tea, peppermint tea, try some natural sleep aid pills, stay away from caffeine in the evening, if you are a smoker nicotine may be keepimg you up or the oposite, i used to smoke a cig in the middle of the night to feel relaxed, try doing some jogging or any kind of cardio a few hours before bed, dont overeat during dinner

Try Taking a light medication from the chemists Ive heard people mention tablets called CALMS they are a natural remedy and will apparently make you feel a little more relaxed....if you have worries talk to a good friend and try and get ti off your chest...Best Wishes Alan

When you are stressed or have a lot on your mind (I can relate) your mind is not occupied when you lay down and try to turn it off. Kind of like a sore thumb you don't notice until you lie down and then it hurts. I know music and milk did not work for me and there are a lot of addictive sleep meds out there so be careful.

You need to see a good psych doc who can diagnose what is going on and find a med to help you through this difficult time in your life. Maybe an anti-depressant or a non addictive sleep aid.

In the meantime, I created a place just for me where I am completely safe, no worries, etc. Mine is a deserted island scenerio. I envision the smells, sounds, tastes, touch, etc. It really relaxes me. Maybe there is a favorite place you can think of to relax in and float off to la la land.

Good Luck

well I do not know where to start. I am going Thur all the things that can help or not help. Getting too much sleep can affect your ability to fall asleep. Lack of exercise can have the same affect. Worrying same affect. With me, it helps to keep the room warm, but not hot and not cold! You will relax better. try white noise, noises that have a calming affect or constant. Go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. Go to bed way before you have to get up, so you do not worry if you can't sleep. all of these are important. Warm milk helps and a little protein with a little cards before you go to bed should help. Your husband sleeps instantly because he probably does not get enough sleep! It should take someone maybe 5-10 minutes to fall asleep if you are not exhausted. I hope this is helpful and not long to read!

its difficult to get to sleep when your mind is racing from one thought to another...heres a couple of things that have helped me cope in the past..... when you toss and turn you have to start all over again so the first thing is to get comfy... have an imaginary box under your bed and as the thoughts come up put them in the box, you are not banishing them but putting them away for the time been. it takes a bit of practise but it does help...

another on is try picture a stop sign in your mind and concentrate on it even say stop to yourself if you have to, if your mind wanders onto something else just picture that stop sign..

hope this helps, it takes practise
good luck

Get a diary or journal and write down whats bothering you. That should lessen the burden on your mind and help you relax and of course sleep!

Try wiggling your toes it releases some chemicals that get you to sleep.
