Is honey dangerous to babies?!

Question: I remember my health visitor saying something about honey and babies and how you have to be careful. I know its bad for little childrens teeth but I remember her saying in rare cases, something in honey can even be fatal to babies :( Is this true and if so how? I am concerned as I use honey a lot in the kitchen etc and even drink it with lemon when have a sore throat. I am frightened of her coming into contact with it if its on me now :(

Infants younger than 12 months are at risk of infant botulism from eating honey. Infant botulism is a rare but serious form of food poisoning.

Honey is a known source of bacterial spores that produce Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These bacteria are typically harmless to older children and adults. But when ingested by an infant, these bacteria make a toxin that can cause infant botulism. It's unclear why this occurs in infants and not in older children or adults.

Infant botulism affects a baby's nervous system and can result in death. Signs and symptoms of infant botulism include:

* Persistent constipation
* Floppy arms, legs and neck
* Weak cry due to muscle weakness
* Weak sucking and poor feeding
* Tired all the time (lethargy)

Botulism spores may also be found in undercooked food, corn syrup and even maple syrup. For this reason, feeding an infant any of these foods is risky as well.

There is nothing wrong if older children or adults are using honey and coming in close contact with the baby. Botulism spores cause disease only when ingested, not when inhaled.

It's to do with the live bacteria in the honey and can be really bad for a babies delicate tummy, yes and even fatal, they are not supposed to eat it until they are over 2 years old.

Honey can contain spores of Botulinum bacteria. As long as she doesn't consume it she's in no danger. Unless you are smearing it all over your skin, she can't be harmed by your use of honey.

only if the beez are still around.
