Hiccups are caused by a sudden rush of air and a spasm of the diaphragm.
They can be triggered by many different factors including, drinking a cold drink with a hot meal, laughing, coughing, eating too quickly or drinking large amounts of alcoholic beverages.
Sometimes hiccups do happen for a reason. This may be, for example, to dislodge small pieces of food which are travelling too slowly down the oesophagus.

Hiccups are usually nothing to worry about, and some GP's often say that hiccups are a sign that your body is healthy. If you are still worried, and are still getting hiccups frequently, then it probably would be a good idea to visit your GP.

(A small tip that usually works for me is to drink a teaspoon of vinegar when you have hiccups.)

Persistent hiccups can be signs of something more ominous. If it is bothering you, you should see your family doctor.

Get a glass of water, tilt your head forward and take a few sips from the wrong side of the glass. I swear it works!

Try holding your breath and swallowing three times, do this a couple of times. If that doesn't work, I'd say go to the doctor.

i get hiccups a lot too, and I don't worry about it. It isn't a big deal, don't worry.

You can either hold your breath while taking 7 sips of water... That always works for me...... Or letting a teaspoon of sugar melt on your tongue.

If they come on after you have drank something, then it is probably just bad luck that you have had them on and off for days!

But if they just come on for no reason, you should take yourself to the dr just in case. Hiccups are caused by a spasm in the diaphragm, when you drink something and it goes down the wrong way its easy to start them. Soozys answer is how I get rid of them, drinking from the wrong side of the glass does seem to work!

I always get them when I drink full fat coke, I rarely get them from diet coke! Dont know why that is!

But go to the dr if they are starting for no reason, because above all, they must be very annoying!

take three sips of water always works for me

I hold my breath for as long as I can then take a deep breath and do it until the hiccups are gone.
