Why do some people have their tonsils removed?!

Question: This doesn't seem to be as common of a practice as it used to be, but I don't understand why it ever was.

Answers: This doesn't seem to be as common of a practice as it used to be, but I don't understand why it ever was.

I had tonsillitis about once a year ever since I was five. By age 20 they became more frequent to two or three times a year. It kept happening more and more often. Every time they would swell they would never go back down to their original size. Also sever ear pain was caused by them. One spring I had three cases in two months. One time I even ended up in the ER since they had almost swelled my throat closed and I was unable to drink fluids on my own.

Eventually they will become so large, and antibiotics will no long help it, the only thing left to do it take them out.

They used to remove them if they got infected but we ahve more powerful antibiotics now and doctors don't like to remove anything unless they have to.

they are removed if they keep getting reinfected over and over--strept throat--guideline has been 5 in a year--out they come--if left untreated they can block air passages--years ago it would cause such severe earaches that after someone had had certain amount drs. would have them removed--sister next to me had to have hers removed--highly allergic to sulpha drugs and penicillian could only be given to her in small amounts--i had such severe earaches that they removed mine when I was five--it isn't common anymore--but I read that more and more drs. are exploring it again because of the strept throat--it is more common than it used to be--also they are saying ear infections are getting to be more common and they use to be little known.

Well I got mine out when I was 13 because I had chronic tonsillitis. I was sick all the time with sore throats ever since I was a kid. I would go to the doctor and they would give me antibiotics. But as soon as the antibiotics ran out, the sore throat would be back. So, I had to have my tonsils removed. After that I went from being sick all the time to hardly ever being sick.

So, sometimes tonsils just have to be removed.
