Its two totally different drugs that affect people different. I was on Valium also & was switched because the Valiums made me feel strange. Xanax I would say is more powerful at 1mg. Those are pretty strong because I was prescribed the .5mg. Tell him to break them in half if it makes him sleepy. Also Xanax are very addictive if you stay on them daily for a period of time. So make sure your friend is cautious.

are you sure he's not taking both right now?

Xanax is stronger than valium and 1mg of xanax is a high dosage for him to start on. My mom has been prescribed xanax for over 20 years and she only takes .25 mg.

xanax would be the stronger one because he requires a lower dosage.

Not that one is stronger than the other, they just work in a little different ways for different people.
I have known loads of people who have to attempt several different medications before they find one that fits them.

Do you realize that anxiety tablets should not be taken for any longer than a few weeks or months at once? Your friend is getting played. Doctors make a commission for selling drugs. After a certain point in time, the anxiety tablets do not work anymore, and they are only designed to provide temporary relief. He needs to look into other ways of lowering his anxiety. Trust me, you don't want to be dependent on cosmetic psychiatry!!!!

Sorry u lost me at I was wondering what is the stronger of the 2 tablets. so umm...good luck.???

Benzo's aren't medicine theyre symptom relief, your friend needs to go to a pshychiatrist 2 times a week to talk about his fears .

If his anxieties have a neurotic source he should be prescribed anti depressants.

If he is having a psychosis he needs a-typical neuroleptics.

Get him to a serious doctor.

I know the Valium will kick your butt. The Xanax is much newer and by the dosage you mentioned much more potent. He could be overmedicating . If that is what he is doing both will make him goofy.

Alprazolam, also known as Xanax, is a short-acting drug of benzodiazepine used to treat moderate to severe anxiety disorders, panic attacks, and also for anxiety associated with clinical depression.
Valium is diazepam, and yes it's slightly weaker than xanax.
Try checking out wikipedia for the scientific details of these.

Both are tranquilizers. Xanax is prescribed to replace valium because it is less addictive. Valium has been around for years. Its more addictive.

Don't do drugs children. Take our word for it.

Xanax is basically a complicated valium. It is the stronger of the 2 as you can see. Normal dosage for valium ranges from .25 mg to 1-5 mg. I know a lot of patients who suffer from anxiety really get relief fron xanax. Give your buddy a couple of days for the meds to titrate and effects such as drowsiness etc. should taper off.

Any reliable MD would stay away from Xanax. It's horribly addictive. It's a "rebound" drug. Meaning that the person taking it will feel it when the drug is wearing off and feel immediately that he needs another pill to relive his anxiety. I too suffer from anxiety issues but deal with them directly through lifestyle changes. Lots more exercise and healthy diet..etc. Xanax will lead him down a dark path, because the dosage will go up quickly when his tolerance goes up.

Always been a bit dubious about the 'long-term' use of these so-called 'confectionary drugs' dude, why they give em' out willy-nilly is beyond me?.......

These two drugs (benzodiazapines)affect the same receptors in the body so they are practically the same. After a while the body does build a "tolerance" so the same amount will not have as much of an effect. In other words, it will take more of the same to have the desired effect. This is why long term use becomes counter-productive.

i have used valium recreationally, obtained from friends with depression. valium has such a bad name these days that many doctors wont prescribe it due to misuse by people like me . basically doc's are having to find alternatives to valium and are now prescribing drugs which they know very little about. your friend should try to get off these types of drugs if possible as long term use can cause addiction. anxiety is fear and your friend should try to get support from people rather than medicine. i hope they get better soon
