Why is it impossible to open your eyes when you sneeze?!

Question: Question speaks for itself really. Just curious :)

While I have no scientific evidence to back this up, I hear the force would be too great, and your eyes would pop out from the pressure of the sneeze, which - I hear - has been clocked at over 100 mph. So keep those eyes shut, like nature intended.

The pressure would blow them out of their sockets

It's actually not impossible, but not many people can do it. There's a myth that your eyeballs would be blown out if you did, but it's not true.

why do i have hands and feet instead of fins

The natural response is to close your eyes but you can make them stay open with concentration.

cuz that would just be weird

Impossible? no, I'm sure if you had surgery to alter your muscle movements you could do it. But closing your eyes when you sneeze is a reflex, perhaps adapted so we don't sneeze germs into our eyes. Not sure.

to protect your eyes.

it's not actually impossible. they proved it so on the tv show Mythbusters.

because when you sneeze, all you bodily functions shut down for 30/40ths of a second

I know nobody will believe me, but I can do it. I have the tiniest sneezes ever, and they come more out of my nose than my mouth, so I can keep my eyes open while I sneeze.

would bee guesing it's to keep forine articles from blowing back in your eyes, but damn good ? never thought of that

Howdy,

Ask Yahoo! covered this topic back in 2005 and found a few sources that explain why the eyes must close when the snot doth blow.

According to Ask Yahoo!, "the sneeze impulse affects a variety of body parts, including the abdomen, chest, neck, and face. During a sneeze, the impulses that travel through your face cause your eyelids to blink. This response is entirely automatic. There's nothing you can do about it. Sneezing puts a lot of pressure on your head and respiratory system, so blinking is probably a protective mechanism."

In other words, it's a kind of reflex that people can't control. You simply can't sneeze without closing your eyes because the actions are "intertwined."
