Can't breathe properly? help!?!

Question: i dont know why but everytime i go to geography or english this weird thing happens to me where i have a hard time breathing in. Everytime I try to breathe in somewhere around my heart area feels like stuck or something and because of this I cant concentrate in class and then I feel like im gonna faint. Like last english class was the worst. I came in class and my teacher was talking and the next thing I know I realized I could not breathe properly and I kept twitching and turning and looking around and I felt like I was going to faint. I really love english and am great at it, but because I couldn't concentrate on my work, I got a bad grade! I don't know what this is but its ruining my life and sometimes at night and early in the morning this happens. I really want it to go away and its really hard to ignore. I would like to see a doctor but my mom says I don't need one because its only my nerves, but she doesn't understand! What do you think this is? and what can I do about it?

[Appologies for the length of this]

It might be nerves, but if it's physically affecting you then you need to kick her backside for not taking you to a doctor. She probably doesn't realise the nature of this, but anything which affects something as vital as breathing needs attention.

- It could be stress related asthma, but that usually affects both breathing in and out since the passageways constrict. If you can breath out then less likely, but if it affects both then you really need to see a doctor.

- Another possibility is anxiety attacks which are just as bad, but might only affect you in breathing in. It still needs attention as unfortunately a lot of people think this kindof thing can just be ignored. We both know it can't be and the effects are very real.

- A third one is that if you're having these in the same rooms all the time, I wonder if it's actually something in those rooms which is triggering asthma. My grandmother for example used to get it badly at her house and not at ours, and it turned out to be invisible mold spours that she was allergic to, but didn't affect anyone else.

To be honest you need to sit her down and tell her straight that this is both affecting your school work and the effects might be coming from your mind (in the case of 2), but the effect is serious and it really needs attention.

If that still doesn't convince her, is there a school nurse or someone like that? Even the teachers might be one option as they don't want you getting bad grades and suffering in class.

I know what parents can be like - I'm 32 and mine still think the anxiety, depression and psychosis are things that I can just "turn off" thus why do I need pills.....arrghhhhh....I'm sure they're just meant to drive us nuts you know! :-)

Good luck and do talk to anyone you think can help!

See your doctor!

maybe you have asthma

It appears to be like a functional disorder for which a mild anxiolytic will do. However before concluding the diagnosis all other possible organic causes are to be excluded. So you may consult your Doctor for necessary investigations and advice.

asthma?

Sounds like a panic attack more than a physical medical problem. You DO need to go to your doctor. Print this page off and show it to your mom so she knows how much this is affecting you. Good luck to you
