Varacies what causes them to bleed?!

Question: I have esophageal varicies. In fact, I have to go into the hospital tomorrow to have them banded. I had a bleed several years ago, and had to have two operations to get them under control. Now, I have to have them banded every six months for the rest of my life.

They are caused by portal vein hypertension, i.e. high blood pressure in the veins, as opposed to the arteries. They bleed because the pressure gets high and the vein literally has a blow out like a tire. You lose blood rapidly, and can die if you do not get rapid emergency care to stem the bleeding. Without treatment, chances of a re-bleed are very high

I hope you don't have them. They are dangerous and life threatening.

There are no such things.
So they can not bleed No more than you can die of a sudden attack of Deth.

Oesophageal varices? Factors that can increase the risk of them bleeding include decompensation of liver disease, malnourishment, excessive alcohol intake, increased intra-abdominal pressure (i.e, through vomiting), Aspirin, NSAID's (i.e Ibuprofen) and bacterial infection.
Hope this helps.
