There are many different types of steroids. Some for size, some for strength, speed, etc.

It is the doses that athletes and bodybuilders tend to use that will have negative health backlash. The doses done in a week by some athletes are ridiculously high.

To sum it up, they are, but the heavy doses it what causes the problems.
