When you call to make a doctors appointment?!

Question: the receptionists asks you what kind of appointment will it be? What kind of appointments are there, what am i supposed to say? Or do you just explain why you want/need to go, even if it's personal?

The receptionist needs to know how much time to schedule for the visit, should it be scheduled first thing in the morning (in case you have been fasting for a test), and if you are going to be getting other tests (lab work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc) Also, if you are part of an HMO, your doctor may have set up certain hours or days she will see you. (I have always thought that was unfair.)
Types of appts: annual physical (incl. blood work and other tests if you are older), allergy testing, general office visit for a minor problem, follow-up visit, general office visit for a major problem , chronic problem reoccurred and you need prescription or referral for a specialist, etc.
You don't need to go into detail about your problem with the receptionist unless you are trying to get in to see the doctor immediately. For ex., if she says you can't get an appt within 2 weeks and you REALLY want to see the doctor, getting upset about how bad things are will work better than getting angry at her.

You need to tell them so they can determine out urgent it needs to be. You could say something like "Im having urinary symptoms" or something. They just need to know if its a routine checkup, shots, or an illness.

You don't need to go into gory details...but what she was probably looking for was info on if you have a problem and was it urgent or not OR if you just needed a routine physical. If she presses you further and the issue is too personal, tell her so and ask to talk to the nurse to help guide you.

I usually say what the problem is, because if it's a simple I might be seeing an intern. I believe some appointments need much investigating or may want to schedule some tests.

If your coming in for a check up say so, or say if it is a sick visit. I usually briefly explain the problem. They need to know so they know what things to have ready and how much time to allow. If it's female things they like to have out all the stuff to do an exam.

She needs to know ur issue to set you up for the required time. Some visits require more time & attn than others. If you need an appointment for female issues, say that to her, eg: I think i have yeast infection. Your Doctor will view her notes prior to coming into the room to see you. Remember she won`t ask you if she didn`t have too.

I know sometimes it's embarrassing but you can say- I'm having some female issues and need to make an appointment to see Dr. so and so and if she needs more info then she will ask and you just answer the questions. The receptionist is used to people being shy about these things.

If you don't understand what they ask of you like what kind of appointment, etc. ask her what she means and I'm sure she would be glad to tell you.
Hope you get well soon!
