Its ridiculous how people all of the sudden turn into mindless victims when it comes to nicotine addiction.
There isn't anyone nowdays that doesn't know the harms of smoking cigarettes. But they still CHOOSE to smoke. And thats a right we should all have.

that poison need not be legal. it is being phased out. but your right. if the smoking addicts stop smoking then they, with thier addictive personalities with pick up on another addiction. it's them not the cigs. but the cig companies do load thier cigs with niccotine. not good. this makes them even more addictive. but thier advertising gimmicks are aimed at kids and they do push them heavily with thier ads. i would not be able to live with myself if i did what they did. it's really a double issue.

That theory holds water for 20 & 30 something individuals. As for the middle aged & elderly, they aern't entirely at fault. For years, tobacco companies denied that their product caused health problems and marketed them as safe items.

So I agree with you if a 25 year old was trying to make a lawsuit/place blame, but I would have to disagree with you if we were talking about a 65+ year old that had quit smoking when they realized that they were no longer safe BUT years later was diagnose with lung cancer. However, if that 65+ year old did not quit, then the do need to take some accountability for their inabilty to quit.

*EDIT:

I think you failed to comprehend what I was saying. I'll try to simplify it.

-20-30, even 40 somethings that are still smoking: No one to blame but themselves. The truth has been out for sometime & they can only hold themselves accoutable

-60+ that quit smoking upon learning the truth, but have been diagnosed with a smoking related illness well after quiting: Are not to be held accountable because the smoking companies lied to them & they did their part when they learned that it was bad.

-60+ year olds that did not quit after learning the truth: This is a fine line. Techincally they've had plenty of time to quit & start to reverse the side effects of smoking. Legally, they can say that they were duped into using the product & was told it was safe & now they are hooked and can't quit. I don't agree with it, but a jury would feel sympathy for them. BUT I too think that they should be held accoutable for continuing to smoke AFTER they learned the truth.

The truth about smoking was not made public until a report cerated in 1964. In which case, tobacco compaines still ademently denied that it had any health consequences. Even the warning that they were forced to put on their product did not say it caused health problems, they said "It may cause..."
Cigarette companies then fought back by creating light cigarettes they were claimed to have less nicotine, so the public thought that this would be better for them than regulars.

This just came out in 1996, so tobacco companies have been denying it for years.

"ONE of the giants of the American tobacco industry had evidence that nicotine was addictive, and manipulated the levels in its cigarettes to maintain the drug's "impact", says a scientist who spent 11 years working for Philip Morris.
The affidavit from Ian Uydess contradicts the testimony of officials from Philip Morris and other tobacco companies made before Congress in 1994. They denied that nicotine was an addictive drug, and claimed that they were only interested in nicotine for its flavour."

Well, if it wasn't available no one would be getting addicted.

years ago, like 50-60 yrs ago, smoking was allowed everywhere, even in a department store you could smoke. every other commercial on TV was right there promoting all the different brands of cigarettes. it probably seemed it was ok to smoke and never thought of it as a health issue. the people were uneducated about it. it was fashionable to smoke. you see the old time movies - everyone is smoking. so i believe the people of those generations should have a right to sue & collect.
things have changed so much over the years regarding cigarettes. i personally have always felt they should be removed from the shelves. they are killers.
they should be BANNED!!!

They should have some accountability. But the tobacco companies ustu say that it was healthy to smoke. And it was good for you. By then people were addicted. Now a days though people know the true and they should stop only if they want to. If you know all the facts and you still want to ruin your life than there's nothing you can do to stop them.

Hey it's hard to argue with personal responsibility - but how about corporate responsibility - they received lots of govt subsidies and they deliberately lied about their product...and now they are pushing it hard in developing nations...and they used cartoon characters to advertise to kids....so unfortunately it's not a black and white issue though I understand how you might think of it that way.

Aparently you have no idea how difficult it is to quit! Not everyone blames the tobacco companies for their addiction to nicotine. Most of the people I know understand that it was their choice to start. Have you ever gone without your daily coffee or soda? Your body goes through the same withdrawls with that as it does with nicotine only with nicotine it is much stronger. It is the same with fattning foods - it is your choice to put it into your mouth knowing that too much can cause so many health problems - but people still do it. Are you going to chastize them as well?

So before you start telling people to STFU and telling them to be accountable, try finding out what they go through when they are trying to quit. Spend a day with someone who's quitting - and maybe then you'll learn to be a bit less judgemental
