Breathing issues!?!

Question: Do any of you know if shallow breathing can cause palpitations and high heart rate? I notice that sometimes during the day I will hold my breath and breath very shallow. I believe this all started when I started having panic attacks.I do not have the attacks anymore because it it under control with medication, but I still feel a high amount of anxiety. I am only 24 and I am on 2 different medications to control palpitations and heart rate. This all started all of a sudden and I have had a stress test and a ultrasound on my heart and every thing came out o.k., but this is really bothering me and any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Shallow breathing causes hyperventilation & can even cause you to become dizzy & faint...that and palpitations are classic signs of anxiety or panic attacks.

It is good you are taking medications to alleviate these symptoms & that you had your heart checked out.

You can also practice deep breathing: Inhale thru your nose; exhale thru your mouth; rest, each for a count of 3. Do 5 min. at a time. It will alleviate your shallow breathing, palpitations & will slow your heart rate. Make sure your stomach inflates & deflates when you are breathing.

If you are not already in therapy, I suggest you see a professional social worker or psychologist to be able to talk about the underlying feelings & thoughts that are causing you anxiety & are frightening to you. You will also learn other coping skills to deal with these feelings.

Best of luck to you & I know the anxiety attacks will lessen.

I am wondering why you can't ask your doctor, as anything we can tell you is purely speculative and therefore we could be wrong as to what is causing your symptoms. See your GP.
