Can't stop pulling out my hair! How to break this bad habit?!


Question: I don't remember when it started but its been a long time. Every time i get nervous or stressed i start touching my hair, sorting through it finding irregularities, split ends, and pulling it out. I absolutely cannot control it. I try to stop myself, only to find myself doing it five minutes later.
Its been getting so bad i got a comment about it at my job. The worst thing is that i don't realize when i do it, and i really cannot stop.
My hair has gotten so bad lately, and stated falling out. I believe its because i've been touching it so much. My scalp is also very itchy, i tried all kinds of shampoos but nothing helps. This also makes me want to touch my hair all the time.
I don't know why it calms me down, but i've been doing it non stop for the longest time. I'm so afraid that i will go bald . I even stopped dying it and straightening it so it would be healthier, but it didn't get better.

Its such a serious problem and is affecting my life.

try pulling your nose for sometimes, just kidding, but this is called TRICHOTILLOMANIA, YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR YOURSELF, you have to go to a psychologist and he will prescribe you some anti-anxiety medication along with behavioral therapy.

I think you might have a disorder called trichtomania. You CAN get help. Look up some info and you will get much more info. Good luck.

YOU'VE GOT TO LOVE YOUR HAIR TO STOP. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MY HAIR AND WILL DO ANYTHING TO KEEP IT HEALHTY AND LOOKING GOOD. YOUVE GOT TO WANT THE SAME THING OR ELSE YOURE JUST GOING TO PULL IT ALL OUT. IF YOU REALLY REALLY CANT STOP THEN SEE A PSYCHIATRIST FOR HELP.

it is a form of ObssesiveCompulsiveDisorder and you can seek therapy. There is hope and you can beat it. I would suggest finding a therapist who specializes in OCD and similar problems.

The most important thing is to never think you're weird or abnormal and to seek help. My sister had the same habit and she felt really embarrassed discussing it with my mum and I, but we helped her overcome it by helping her realise why she does it and that she doesn't need to use it as a coping method any more. She is now free from it and is glad she asked for help.

You may have a condition called trichotillomania. It can be easily treated with medication and/or a mental reconditioning. You are not crazy, it's more common than you realize, some cases just worse than others. Hang in there sweetie, go to a doctor, and you will be fine!
