Why do some people think that by getting a flu-shot means that won't get the!

Question: The flu is a constantly changing virus. A flu-shot protects against 1 strain of the flu. However, there are BILLIONS or strains the virus can evolve into. If the virus was even remotely smart, it would figure out which ones don't work and change to a new one that isn't protected. So why waste your time getting vaccinated?

Influenza vaccines are developed yearly depending on forecasts of the most prevalent types of viruses under given conditions.

Vaccines are usually developed by using "killed" viruses, posing no threat to us, yet triggering our immunes systems to develop antibodies. These antibodies in our systems can attack types of viruses they are developed for, or a strain that is very close.

It is a matter of playing the odds; most who need the vaccines are the very young, the very old, the immune compromised and the healthcare workers who will be exposed more than the average citizen.

Viruses are a non intelligent form of life, and evolve in response to environmental conditions. If viruses were intelligent and proactive, human life would have ceased on this planet a long time ago.

Getting a flu shot does not mean you won't get the flu, but it is a definite increase in the odds that you won't acquire the predominant strain, and for some it can mean the difference between life and death. Do a little research and you will find that influenza was a huge killer before the advent of vaccination. Compare the mortality rate from influenza fifty years ago versus today, and you will find a direct correlation to the efficacy of flu shots.
