How many ounces does your bladder hold? What determines?!

Question: I've been in bathrooms where other stall people can pee for like 6 minutes straight!!

I've worked with people who don't pee for an entire 8 hour shift!!

I pee like every 2 hours, for 10 seconds. I get constant comments when I return from the bathroom: "wow, that was fast" and "did you even go?"

.. ANYWAY, it lead me to wonder:
how many ounces can a bladder hold?
What determines big bladders/ small bladders?
~thanks

Unfortunately I think it's mostly just genetics and what you were born with, one way or the other. I'm a guy, but in the same boat as you -- I've had all manner of roommates, friends, co workers, etc. who can hold it literally all day, and it takes them forever to empty it out when they do go... and meanwhile I make like 12 trips of 10 seconds each. That's even when I make myself hold it as long as I can stand because I get sick of having to get up so often. It's irritating, for sure!!

I've done a little research on the subject and found different things (which I think points again to how everyone's bladder is different), but in general, a "normal" adult bladder is supposed to hold anywhere between 16 and 24 ounces (2 to 3 cups) before the urge to urinate becomes overwhelming. This is an "average" number and I've known people who can hold well over a quart (32 ounces). If you're really curious, you could try drinking lots of water on a day when you're home all day (NOT caffeine or alcohol, which can mess with your bladder muscles and screw up the results) and hold it until you just can't hold anymore without leaking, then pee into some kind of measuring container (just wash it thoroughly afterwards!!).

You feel the first urge to go when your bladder is at about half its full capacity... so if you're in the habit of going at the first sign of the urge, it's possible you're not stretching your bladder out as far as it's designed to go. If that's the case, try holding it for 5 or 10 extra minutes (when you aren't in the middle of an important task) and see if the urge doesn't lessen a little bit. Do NOT get in the habit of holding it until the last possible second, though -- you can put yourself at risk for bladder infections. If you have to go so urgently that you worry about not being able to make it in time, you might want to get checked for an infection or "overactive bladder" by your doc.

Good luck, I feel your pain on this one!

the bladder can hold up to 2 cups of urine!

Everyone's Bladder amount is different, because everyones Bladder size is different.

If you to the bathroom frequent, you either have a small bladder(s), or some kind of urinary trac infection.
