Antidepressants don't work??!

Question: The results of a scientific study released today found that antidepressants don't work. It said that no differentiation could be made between patients that were given placebos and antidepressants... I've been taking prozac (among others) for the last few years and I do feel that they help me, even if it is just a placebo effect thats fine with me, as long as I can get out of the bed in the morning thats good enough.... I think this news could have a negative impact on the mental health of alot of people.. Have antidepressants worked for you?

I definitely wouldn't be doing my degree still and possibly wouldn't be here if it wasn't for ssri's. As a medical student I am disgusted by this research. How many people are going to come off their anti-depressants and end up in serious trouble with rebound depression possibly leading to increased suicide rates. Anti-depressants are not "happy pills" as some people expect. In my experience they give you a feeling of nothingness, reducing the depression allowing you to deal with the problems causing the depression. I am aware of the placebo effect within 2 days of starting mine I felt better (even though they take more than 2 weeks to "work") but the serotonin imbalance in the brain found in depression is treated by these drugs.

I am disgusted by this research and feel strongly that it is going to put many many people in danger.

The research said that those who took the fake pills had a placebo effect. Well, even a placebo effect is better than no effect at all.

yes they have and no its not a placebo, i think some drugs dont work and others do, i was on them for 2 years and my friend is on them as shes bi polar, its not all in peoples heads its actually helping us

I'm taking 10mg Citalopram following a miscarriage and a severe loss of appetite. I've now regained nearly 3 quarters of what I lost.

I despise the media for printing this information about AD's sending those already depressed even lower.

If you're uncomfortable with the media reports today I'd go and see your doctor for a chat - its free and they will be pleased that you've gone to them seaking advice following these reports.

Good luck

They worked for a family member i know. Even if they dont 'work' it still makes the person whos taking the pills think that it is doing them well, and therefore makes them feel they are getting better, a bit like a child when you give them 'the magic sponge' when they have fallen over. It helps people get through it mentally.

I took prozac. One pill a day didn't do much for me, two most definitely did. I appreciate that the researchers collated the results from a large number of studies, I still think the evidence of people's own experiences with anti-depressants offers more substantial evidence of their effects.

These are merely the findings of one institution. It's the very nature of research that not everyone will come to the same conclusions.

I have been on prozac and zoloft for depression and anxiety disorder. Honestly, it didn't do a whole lot. I did some research and now I drink green tea...no more symptoms! Its great! I truely think that there are to many primary care doctors that are prescribing "mental health drugs". They should instead by referring their patients to a psychologist for any medications as they are the ones trained in mental health. I wonder if this test was done on people under psych. care or just peolpe that had been perscribed the drug by their family doctor?

It's one study. Some scientist who wanted to get his name in the papers, I'd say. Of course they work.

The placebo effect is great and if that works for you, fantastic! But why do we have to screw with the chemicals and brain make-up just for a placebo effect? Taking drugs like that has serious long term consequences.

By the way, they have known for years that they really aren't effective.

Deffo worked for me . I wouldn't be here without them !
