Answers: Why do Docters call what the specialize and do for a living "practice" ?

Because they're 'practicing' on you. Literally.

Read "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science" by Atul Gawande, M.D., M.P.H.

i'm not sure.

I always thought it was because they "practiced" (did) medicine. You know...like lawyers practice law.

They are not sure what they are doing some of the time, so they are practicing to get it right on the next patient...

JK I don't know...

Because it's what they practice every day.

Maybe because it is an art and a learned skill, one in which you always continue to learn.....and I have had a few doctors "practice" on me.

a practice is like a establishment. they practice medicine is like that is what they do. same thing as a law practice. this word practice came first then the word practice like practicing an instrument came second.

and it's DoctOr not Docter. twice.

It's just an "old school" way of saying that's what he does for a living.

It's just a term they use. Don't take i literally.

because medicine is a science without real structure, dependant on individual responses to treatment, not to the hard results expected from other sciences. See,no matter how many times you treat small cell carcinoma or psoriasis each treatment will have to be adjusted for each patient. Therefore you never "make perfect" you practice practice practice.

Because that is all they can do is practice medicine. They do the best they can with the knowledge and instinct they have, but nothing is a sure thing when it comes to deciphering the human body.
That is why we need to give them all the info, not just the stuff we think is okay. And ask questions! Take notes! Bring somebody with to help listen and remember. Doctors are human beings with faults and flaws just like the rest of us. You must be in charge of your health and your doctor is a member of your health team- not the only member!

No matter how much a Doctor knows, there is always something to learn. The true spirit of the Hippocratic Oath is for an M.D. to always be open to learning something new from every patient treated. Also, there are new developments in Medicine every day. Ideally a Doctor is becoming a better doctor continually through a lifetime in the profession. So a Doctor is always practicing, regardless of how long since the degree.
