Mum still waiting for op that should have been done at 8.30?!

Question: Myself and my brother took Mum into hospital for 7.30 this morning, I left at 11.15 and she should have had her op in the next hour, I've just rang at 3 and poor thing still hasn't had it, they are doing it soon, I am disgusted at this Mum is 83. The only good thing is they are keeping her in tonight. I know that some op's are cancelled, has anyone else ever had this happen to someone of that age, it's awful.

My son went in as an emergency, needed an arthroscope on his knee, he was kept for three days on the emergency ward waiting for this op being told every day yes you're on the list and starving him from 11pm the night before. Eventually on day 3 he had the op and was then transferred to a ward to be seeing by the ortho docs, it seems there just isn't enough surgeons in some areas and when emergency ops take place others get slid down the list. Grumble we may but at least we have a NHS and though we may get frustrated at times with cancellations or such just think that the reason our op is cancelled or delayed is someone in a worse situation than us at that time mmmmmmmmmmmm..... I guess patience and count our blessings eh.
Hope your mum gets well soon.

Sometimes it depends on what the op is. If there are a lot of emergencys' that require the surgeons or the operating room they will normally go to the front of the queue even though your moms' op was scheduled in.

That sounds a terrible experience for your Mum and family. I really hope she's doing well. I have to say from my own personal experience of the NHS - I bet there are alot of people with similar stories. Best wishes.

It is possible her operation was delayed for an emergency, or perhaps an operation scheduled ahead of her turned out to be more difficult than planned. When scheduling operations, one cannot always anticipate every thing that might happen to affect the schedule.

On the other hand what do you expect from a socialist system? There is no incentive to deliver could customer service.

At least they are still planning on doing her surgery today - it's not as if her operation has been cancelled - just delayed.

The surgeons may have had to deal with an emergency or there may be technical difficulties in theatre.

No-one likes delays or cancellations, especially when the patients concerned are elderly. A delay of a few hours is not that big a deal if you think about it and if it was your Mum who was the emergency then you would expect her to get priority over someone else.
