sounds like opiates to me (oxycontin, heroin, morphine, fentanyl). Opiates will relax someone to the point that they nod off, stare into space, and don't care about anything. The loss of weight for most addicts is due to the fact that all the money they have is spent on drugs rather than food. Plus, drugs deplete the body of essential vitamins and minerals. I'm a recovering heroin and cocaine addict and it sounds like heroin to me. I don't think it's cocaine because he would be very uptight and paranoid all the time. Coke speeds you up and heroin slows you down, so if he's really sluggish, sleepy, then I'd think it's opiates. Look for other signs of opiate use also: extremely itchy skin (all over), very small, pinpoint pupils (cocaine pupils would be very large). I used drugs for 17 years and have now been clean for 7 months, so I definitely know about this stuff.
Don't rule out mental problems also. The other answers are correct when they say that many mental issues are misdiagnosed and confused with drug abuse. He could just be depressed.......talk to him. Good luck.

He could simply have a mental illness. Many symptoms of mental illness are mistaken for drug abuse. Psychotic depression, clinical depression and schizophrenia all have these symptoms. I would take him to a doctor and explain. He may just need meds

he probably mental?

Sounds like speed. Is he touchy and easily angered? Might be coke, too. Hard to say from your description. Who's financing his drug habit? Does he have a pshyciatric history? Give more info. Good luck!

Sounds like the effects of strong opiates.
Painkillers like oxycodone or a high dosage of vicodin. Maybe even heroin if it was really serious.
All the symptoms you described match that. But he could just have a serious case of depression.

as you posted this 40 mins ago as well i can take crack out of the possibles - it doesn't last that long. doesn't sound like lsd of mushrooms(unless his pupils are huge but still doesn't sound right) nor does it sound like MDMA(ecstasy) and it's almost definitely not cocaine or speed. have a look at his nostrils - if you see white powder then it could be ketamine(if it is it will wear off soon and isn't too dangerous)
could be heroin (see if you can see any needlemarks - although it can be smoked as well but not as dangerous if smoked).
i don't know enough about crank or crystal meth (never tried them - although doesn't sound like what i've seen of people on meth) maybe DMT - but it doesn't last that long either
could be prescription meds - theres a lot to choose from.
or it could just be a whole lot of pot. it can do that in excess too.
hope this helps - i'm in UK but will be up for awake for a little while if you have any more questions

I would say possibly ketamine or dxm in the form of cough medicine. Both are dissociatives. Look it up and see if the symptoms match him. If not I would say some sort of opiate or possibly even pharmaceuticals such as benzodiazepines and whatnot. I know that doesnt narrow it down much but I tried.

sounds like meth to me

I wouldn't discard a brain tumor myself due to the weight lost going along with these very vague mental symptoms.

I'd suspect a drug use if money's been dissapearing (unless he has a well paid job and pays everything himself but given his bizarre behavior that wouldn't be too likely).

Before giving him the blame-game finger, he should get a psyquiatrist evaluation. Depression that can lead to suicide can have oddball symptoms in many people or he could suffer from some metabolic disease that causes mental alterations that could be easily treated. Being over 21 though, he'd have to go on his own free will unless a psyquiatrist deems he's a danger for himself at this point and could detain him for a certain amount of hours against his will.

It's definitely not hallucinogens though. The effect takes hours (A regular dose of LSD lasts over 12 hours) and you can still talk to people under the state as long as they aren't too startled and freaked out by the trip. I'd wonder if it were pot cuse pot in ample doses causes you to be hungry, not lose appetite. Plus his eyes would be red.
