You're not dumb! This is a tricky question...mmmm well my answer would be that people who have been harmed and abused often have a range of personal problems following their ordeal. Abused/harmed victims can have a whole range of emotional, psychological and perhaps even physical scars as a result of their terrible experience(s). They may find their life extremely hard to deal with and need help from social workers/counsellors etc.
And I imagine that for a suuport worker/social worker etc, it would be very challenging to help such a victim. For example, as a support worker, you may have to listen to the person's horrific experiences of molestation, abuse, violence. Her/his story and circumstance may be very upsetting to you, and may really upset you.
As a support worker, you may have to provide the victim with a shoulder to cry on, you may see their highs and their lows-and it may be a rocky road for both of you, as you attempt to make the victim recover from their ordeal.
As a result of this difficult, emotional situation you (as a support worker) may need the help and guidance of other, more experienced employees to help you deal with the case. Supervisors may also provide a good suggestion, 'a second opinion'. The supervisor will be someone that you can talk to about the case and will likely give you lots of tips on how to deal with the situation as best as you can (afterall supervisors will have dealt with hundreds of other cases).
Having a supervisor support you can also 'protect' you in the event of the victim becoming angry or violent with you. Or in case they make a false allegation against you (please see my personal experience of dealing with this below).
I hope my answe helped you and good luck with your SVQ!
;-)
P.S.
I worked in a school where a boy (who was known in the school as a compulsive liar) was abused by his family (I do not believe he lied about his abuse, i think this was completely true) . Although I felt extremely sad for what this young boy had suffered, I knew that I had to protect myself, as a teacher too (because I knew he had a tendency to tell lies). SO when I was teaching this student, I always requested that I was never alone with this student and that another member of staff was present. I did this because I was scared incase the boy would acuse me of something false. So in this situation, my supervisor was with me to support me in this way (to prevent false accusations) .

I suppose its in case when they talk about what happened to them , they might become angry and violent, because they are having trouble delaing with their emotions. They also might be unpredictable and you might have trouble calming them down on your own.

people need to be supervised as the person who you think may have been harmed may become aggressive toward you or even go the other way and not want to say anything. The superviser needs to be there to make sure no harm comes to yourself or the person u r dealing with. They are also there to emotionally support you as sometimes abuse/harm cases can hit you hard and we all need to speak to someone sometimes to offload. There should be 2 people present at all times so there is someone to back you up too, just in case. Hope this helps kel

i would like to add to kel's answer that the other person is also there as a chaperone for legal reasons, for example, if the person you are with starts to get upset, you put your arm around their shoulder and back for emotional support, later that person said you touched them in a bad way, your chaperone will be able to back you up to say that never happened, if you never had a chaperone you would not have a leg to stand on in court. so other than to help out and supervise they are there for a legal reason.

other lines of work that this is important in is the dentist with the nurse and in the doctors if you had a male patient with a female doctor and vica versa.
